The Fond du Lac Babe Ruth baseball team won the state tournament this past weekend in Dodgeville.
The team in the 16-to-18 classification beat Darlington 11-1 and Cross Plains 4-1 on July 5, and it beat Ashland 13-9 the following day to reach the semifinals. Fond du Lac beat St. Peter 6-3 in the semifinal on July 7 before winning the championship game 7-3 against Wisconsin Heights.
Against Darlington, Sam Klein was 4-of-4 with three RBIs, Caleb Konen was 2-for-3 and Hunter Veness struck out six in four innings.
Trevor Theisen struck out eight in a complete game against Cross Plains. Klein and Alex Kaphengst both had two hits and Matt Schnell hit a two-run double.
Kaphengst was 4-for-5 and Patrick Young and Schnell both had two hits against Ashland. After the starting pitcher struggled, Tyler Kryzanowski and Veness split the final 5 2/3 innings to allow the offense to win the game.
On one day rest, Theisen pitched another complete game against St. Peter. He also hit a bases clearing double in the sixth inning to give Fond du Lac the lead. Schnell was 4-for-4 and Logan Wendt and Konen both made outstanding defensive plays in the outfield.
In the championship, Veness pitched a complete-game three-hitter and Klein hit a solo homer in the fourth. Fond du Lac took control with a five-run second inning.
Fond du Lac goes back to Dodgeville this weekend for the Ohio Valley Regional starting Saturday.
