Fossil Ridge High School’s softball team beat the newly crowned No. 1 team in the state, winning 3-2 over visiting Loveland on Tuesday.

Loveland had moved to No. 1 in The Denver Post’s coaches’ poll after beating previous No. 1 Legacy.

“It’s huge for the program to beat the No. 1 team in the state,” Fossil Ridge coach David Philop said. “We’re trying to establish our program and this is probably the biggest win for us.”

The victory for the SaberCats (16-2, 9-1 Front Range League) also forced a three-way tie atop the league with one game to play in the regular season. Legacy and Loveland also are 9-1 in the FRL. The SaberCats play Poudre on Thursday.
