Armando Torres knew what he was up against Thursday.
The Green Bay East senior raced against Sheboygan South’s McKena Ramos twice this season prior to the Fox River Classic Conference cross-country meet at Colburn Park.
But the kick that Ramos showed over the last 1,000 meters nullified any strategy Torres had coming in, as Ramos won the FRCC boys individual title in 15 minutes, 37.7 seconds.
The Red Devils (107) also finished second as a team behind Sheboygan North (57) for the boys title.
Torres, who had a time of 15:49.2, started out strong to build about a 10-foot cushion halfway through the 5,000-meter course before Ramos found his extra gear.
“I was expecting a good kick from him, so that’s why I was trying to get away from him in the beginning,” Torres said. “But he stayed with me the whole time.”
In attempting to become the second East runner in four years to win the conference meet, Torres ran his best time at the course, where he won the Green Bay City Meet in 16:12 on Sept. 14.
Meanwhile, De Pere senior Austin Gokey (16:11.2) edged Green Bay Preble sophomore Daniel LaLuzerne (16:27.6) for third.
Gokey said he is looking forward to trying to qualify for state for a fourth time at the WIAA Division 1 Kimberly sectional on Oct. 20, which won’t include Sheboygan South and Ramos.
“It will be just me and Armando, so we will fight it out there,” Gokey said. “I know his game plan is always to try and go out fast to build a lead. … I just need to be ready for that and hope I stick with him more.”
