Freehold earns shutout over Matawan


Sophomore defender Lindsay Cerio scored off a corner kick at 55:51 and junior midfielder Hayley Rice scored on a header at 71:00 as Freehold girls soccer team edged Matawan, 2-0, in a Class B North game on Friday afternoon.

The Colonials (1-0, 1-0) avenged a 1-0 defeat to the Huskies (0-1, 0-1) in last year’s NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III final, which was the last time the school’s met before Friday.

Cerio scored from 12 yards out into the upper right corner and Rice’s header was off a free kick from six yards out. Freehold goalie Sara Cobb made one save for the shutout and Matawan goalie Karen David made 20 saves.

OCEAN 5, NEPTUNE 0: Sophomore Taylor Racioppi notched a hat trick to lead the Spartans (1-0, 1-0) over the Scarlet Fliers (0-1, 0-1) in a Class B North game.

Racioppi’s first goal, which put Ocean up 3-0, came after sophomore forward Alex Pickett gained control of the ball around the 40 yard line. Pickett one-touched a pass down the right sideline and Racioppi took over from there. She beat one defender and then blasted in a shot from 10 yards out to the near post at 34:24. Her second and third goals came at 58:15 and 70:00. Ocean goalie Mackenzie Oates made five saves and Neptune’s Alyssa Pojero made 14 saves.

TR NORTH 4, SOUTHERN 0: Danae O’Halloran produced a hat trick with goalis in the 34th, 66th and 77th minute as the Mariners (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Rams (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A South game. Emma Roussos added a goal in the 67th minute and Alyssa Dellaqua made four saves for the shutout. Southern’s Kelsey Whitaker made 12 saves.


COLTS NECK 2, CBA 1: Joe Martinho scored a late goal, giving the Cougars (1-0, 1-0) a big early victory over the Colts (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A North game. Martinho took a shot on a tough angle in the corner of the 18, and got just the right deflection in the 62 minute for the late game winner.

The Colts tied the game early in the sixth minute on a header from Nick Dedelice.


MONMOUTH 3, SHORE 2: Despite singles victories by Melissa Granet and Jen Noji by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-0, respectively, the Blue Devils (0-1, 0-1) fell to the Falcons (1-0, 1-0) in this season opening Class A Central showdown thanks to a strong singles showing from Emily Chen, who earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory, and impressive doubles play from Jackie Hom and Nina Chung (6-1, 6-3), as well as Jessica and Jackie Santelle (6-4, 6-0).

HOLMDEL 4, MANASQUAN 1: Abby Duddy’s 6-2, 6-3 singles victory was the lone bright spot for the Warriors (1-1, 1-1) in this early season Class A Central clash as the Hornets (1-0, 1-0) earned the win on the back of convincing singles showings by Lucy Wang (6-1, 6-4) and Nandini Krishnaswamy (5-7, 6-2, 6-1) and equally impressive doubles play by Lauren Byrket and Tiffany Huang (6-0, 6-2), as well as Sarah Yan and Stephanie Pugh (6-0, 6-0).


CENTRAL 3, BARNEGAT 0: Lexi Pepe, Lauren Castellano and Brittany Oldenhoff each scored one goal as the Golden Eagles (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Bengals (0-1, 0-1) in a Class B South game.

Hannah Crick had two assists, and Allie Zambito had one assist for the Bengals.

LACEY 7, BRICK MEM. 0: Alyssa Smialowicz scored three goals to open the first half as the Lions (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Mustangs (0-2, 0-1) in a Class A South game.

Senior Rachel Brignola scored two goals and Abigail Granit and Emily Lane each added one goal. Brittany Shaughnnessy collected seven saves for the Mustangs.
