Losers no more.
It took Gateway Charter 1,776 minutes, 148 quarters and 37 games to taste victory. And taste it they did.
Behind a career passing performance by senior Ronnie Tape, the Gateway Griffins (1-4) overpowered the Oasis Sharks at Storm Field in Cape Coral.
“This is an incredible feeling,” said Tape, who had 199 yards of total offense and four touchdown passes. “I credit our coaching staff for helping us get through this losing streak. They stay on us. They keep us focused. They keep us moving in the right direction.”
Oasis struggled on both sides of the ball, committing four turnovers and giving up 429 total yards on defense. The Sharks (1-4) were also hampered by several penalties, including five personal fouls and an ejection.
Oasis interim Coach Joe Bowan was effusive in defeat.
“That’s a good team,” Bowan said. “We’re where Gateway was two years ago. We see what we have to do to get better. We’ll keep working hard. We’ll get there.”
