Giles County, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, will be without its coach for Friday’s District 12-AA matchup with Marshall County and for one other game as a TSSAA investigation into a recruiting violation continues.
David O’Connor confirmed Tuesday that he was suspended Sunday by principal Mark Cardin pending the results of the investigation.
“I’ll miss the Marshall County game (and this week’s practice), and the open week of practice next week,” O’Connor said. “The following week, we play Spring Hill. I can run practice, but I’ll have to miss the game.”
O’Connor said he and Cardin met with TSSAA officials last week regarding the situation.
“We are working with the TSSAA to finalize a disciplinary action,” Cardin said. “I don’t see (the suspension) being enough. He is currently suspended from football activities for two weeks.”
Cardin said the violation, which stemmed from illegal contact over the summer with a student from another high school, was self-reported.
Giles County, which won the Class 4A championship in 2009, is 4-0 with nondistrict wins over Lincoln County and Lawrence County as well as 12-AA wins over East Hickman and Hickman County.
Defensive coordinator Josh Beddingfield and offensive coordinator Thomas Osteen will serve as co-head coaches during O’Connor’s suspension.
