The varsity girls swimming and diving team achieved a giant goal this weekend by placing second at the CAAC Blue Championship Meet and clinching itself a share of the schools first ever CAAC Blue Championship. By virtue of the teams 7-0 regular season record they shared the conference title with the CAAC Blue Meet champions from Okemos High School.
The team received contributions from a variety of sources. Leading the way was the junior tandem of Rachael Charlow and Taylor Stensen.
Stensen was second in both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke while Charlow placed 2nd in both the 200 Individual Medley & 100 Backstroke. Charlow’s time of 1:01.85 in the Backstroke surpassed her previously held school record once again.
Senior captains Ashley Lopez, Grace Haggerty and Lauren Painter played the role of senior leaders in and out of the water this weekend. Haggerty placed fourth in the 50 Freestyle and seventh in the 100 Freestyle, while Lopez captured a fifth place finish in both the 100 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly.
Painter made it four straight years of top five finishes at the conference meet as she placed third with 333.70 points this season.
Another junior, Rachel Kehren, led the team in the distance events by placing in fourth place in both the 200 and 500 Freestyle events.
Sophomore Kendall Ilieff made her first championship final at the league meet while placing eighth in the 200 Freestyle and Lissa Mueller-Hayes and Colleen Simon finished eighth and fifth respectively in the 100 Breaststroke.
The 500 Freestyle was a heavily populated event for the girls this season as seniors Lydia Bayley and Marisol Dempsey were joined by sophomore Lillie Butkovich and freshman Elizabeth Wood in finishing in scoring position inside the top 16 places.
Junior Sarah Blundy had a very strong meet as she finished in 12th place in the 100 Butterfly and placed 14th in the 100 Backstroke. Rounding out the individual scoring was sophomore Kiley Whetter who had her best ever league finish in eighth place.
On the relay front the team of Charlow, Stensen, Lopez and Mueller-Hayes finished in third place with a time of 1:56.42 in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Haggerty, Mueller-Hayes, Kehren and Stensen swam to a fourth place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay. In the final event of the weekend the 400 Freestyle Relay rallied to place second in the 400 Freestyle Relay. That team was comprised of Haggerty, Kehren, Lopez and Charlow and finished in 3:52.57.
