In a contest featuring two evenly-matched teams, the Pennfield girls’ basketball team fended off Kalamazoo Christian’s comeback attempt on Tuesday night.
The visiting Panthers narrowly edged K-Christian by a score of 49-47 in Kalamazoo Valley Association action.
“We had a big first quarter, scored 21 in the first quarter, they came back and we held them off,” said Pennfield head coach Rick Saldana. “The clock was in our favor. We did a good job of sustaining the lead. They have a lot of size so we had to work against it.”
Pennfield (2-1, 2-1) was led by Shelby Miller with 17 points, six assists and three steals. Also for the Panthers, Armani Anderson had 12 points and nine rebounds, Katilyn Wilke had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals and Hannah Lenz had eight points, three rebounds and one assist.

Battle Creek Central 59, (at) Lansing Sexton 31: Battle Creek Central’s Ka-Leah Ryan scored a career-high 21 points to go along with four assists in the non-league victory. Also for the Bearcats (1-3), Kaylee Ryan had 14 points and Antinique Spencer had a career-high 10 points.
Athens 61, (at) Jonesville 51: Athens’ Chantel Davenport finished with 16 points and eight rebounds in the Big Eight win. Also for the Indians (4-0, 2-0) Allison Fuller had 15 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists, and Allysha Beal had 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.
(At) Galesburg-Augusta 48, Schoolcraft 28: Galesburg-Augusta’s Kati Thompson had 18 points, six rebounds and two assists in the KVA win. Also for the Rams (3-1, 3-0), Noelle Mejeur and Kathyn Dooley had eight points apiece. Mejeur also had five rebounds and Leah Savage had three steals and two blocks.
(At) Bronson 51, Coldwater 32: Bronson’s Kylei Ratkowski scored 21 points in the non-league victory. Also for the Vikings, Amberly Bercaw had nine points and six assists, while Mallorie Bassage had six points and 11 rebounds. Coldwater was led by McKenzie Galloway with seven points and six steals.
Reading 27, Union City 26: Reading scored in the final six seconds to get the win. The Chargers (1-3) were led by Brooke Johnson with 10 points with Katie Birch getting six points.
(At) Olivet 42, Parchment 23: Olivet’s Hayley Walkowski had 21 points, six steals and four rebounds in the KVA victory. Also for the Eagles (3-1, 3-0) Allison Kirk had nine points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
(At) Will Carleton 37, Calhoun Christian 35 (OT): Kelsey Snowball had 15 points and 16 rebounds in the loss for Calhoun Christian (1-1).
