The third-seeded Arlington High School girls soccer team will host a Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal game Tuesday, having already gained confidence from its first-round victory.
Freedom Plains’ Admirals topped visiting Roy C. Ketcham, the tournament’s 14th seed, 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.
“It’s definitely a good confidence builder,” said Arlington coach Kieran McIlvenny, whose Admirals (12-4) will host either No. 6 Mahopac or No. 11 New Rochelle on Tuesday; those teams squared off Saturday in a game that ended after press time. “We have a lot of respect for whatever team we play.”
Wappingers Falls’ Indians (6-11) earned the Admirals’ respect this day, holding their local rivals to the one goal.
“We knew it was going to be a tough match,” said McIlvenny, adding the teams’ seeds didn’t matter in this matchup of local rivals.
Midway through the first half, defender Ciara McIlvenny intercepted a pass near midfield and took it down the middle of Arlington’s offensive end. Passing the ball to her left, McIlvenny placed the ball at the feet of Biz LaTuso, who blasted a shot toward the keeper’s left side for the game’s lone goal.
While LaTuso gave the Admirals the lead, their coach lauded defenders like Katie Curran, Emily Campos, Erica Allen and McIlvenny for making that one-goal edge stand up.
“I thought our defense played really well,” Kieran McIlvenny said.
