A pair of lethal goal scorers were recently named to the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association all-state team.
Winnebago Lutheran’s Lexi Herrewig and Campbellsport’s Paige Birschbach were both named to the “Best of the Rest” team.
In 23 games this season, Birschbach scored 32 goals and assisted on another 14 for the Cougars for 78 points; that’s enough to put her at 10th for total points on wissports.net for point leaders in Wisconsin this past season. She already has 93 goals through her junior year and was named EWC Player of the Year this past season.
Campbellsport Coach Tim Scannell commented, “As our program gets stronger each year, we are able to surround Paige with good players. This allows her to shine even more. I believe that this is just the beginning for Paige and that the best is yet to come.”
Herrewig is done with her high school career, but not before rewriting WLA’s record book with her 123 career goals. This past season she finished with 28 goals and 10 assists. Those numbers weren’t as gaudy as her sophomore and junior seasons, but WLA coach Greg Hoffmann said her impact on the game was even greater.
“She had quite a different role because she was the one that had to make things happen as well as try to score. She had more on her plate and she was a marked girl,” he said. “She came through for us more and more as the season went on.”
