Fighting fatigue on the road, the John Jay High School girls soccer team defeated Carmel 4-2 on Wednesday.
The Patriots, who defeated North Salem 5-2 on Tuesday, will host Mahopac today and Our Lady of Lourdes on Friday to complete a busy stretch.
“I thought we defended better at points,” John Jay coach C.J. Greenwood said, before noting the impact of Columbus Day travel soccer tournaments. “The kids are on tired legs right now. A lot of them played four games over the weekend at a college showcase, and we have four games now.”
Trailing 1-0, John Jay recorded three goals in the final 13 minutes of the first half. Olivia Oppenheim scored one and assisted on others by Haley Thoma and Alyssa Zeoli. Zeoli then capped the scoring in the 58th minute. Goalie Rachel Long turned away 12 Rams shots.
Greenwood, though, praised the contributions of his reserves.
“My bench saved us,” he said, noting he hopes to give each of his starters 80 minutes of rest by the end of the week. “We put out a challenge to (the bench): We’ll put you out on the field and the level can’t drop. To a person, they’ve done what they can do.”
