Girls' soccer: No. 1 Ankeny blanks SE Polk, earns fourth-straight state berth

There was no reason for the Ankeny girls’ soccer team to panic — even after a scoreless first half against CIML Central Conference rival Southeast Polk.
The top-ranked Hawkettes exploded for five goals in a 10-minute stretch of the second half and went on to post a 6-0 victory in a Class 3-A regional final Monday night at Ankeny. They earned their fourth consecutive trip to this week’s state tournament at Muscatine.
“I don’t think we were worried,” said junior Mary Brandt, who had two of Ankeny’s goals after missing a pair of point-blank shots in the first half. “We were mostly just kind of frustrated, but we knew we could get them in and I’m glad that we did.”
Alexis Heffernan scored on a penalty kick in the 45th minute for the game’s first goal.
The senior did not play on the team last season, when the Hawkettes captured their first state title.
“It feels great to be going to state,” Heffernan said.
Amber Nieland, Kasey Hurt and Kelsey Laughman also had goals for Ankeny (18-0), which extended its winning streak to 29 games.
The Hawkettes will play No. 10 Linn-Mar of Marion in a Class 3-A quarterfinal match on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
