Senior goalkeeper Megan Goodson made three saves in a shootout — and sent the ball soaring into the net when she was called upon — as Waukee beat Valley on Monday night to qualify for the state tournament with a 2-1 win.
Waukee held the Tigers to one goal in the girls’ soccer regional final.
The Warriors had a 3-1 advantage in the shootout.
The last time Waukee played at Valley Stadium, the Warriors shut out the Tigers 1-0. The outcome Monday looked to be the same until senior forward Haley Helverson fired a 25-yard direct kick to the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1 with less than four minutes left.
At the end of regulation, coach Tony Gabriel told his team not to get down, emphasizing that they still had a 20-minute overtime in which to get another goal in.
But both teams failed to break the tie in the overtime, sending them into a shootout.
“She’s been there before,” Gabriel said of Goodson. “We had a shootout with Valley earlier this season and it was the same result.”
Waukee struck first in the match off the foot of senior forward Steph Williams in fifth minute, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
For the remainder of the first half and most of the second, the Tigers were scoreless.
“We definitely wanted to minimize their chances and we wanted minimize our mistakes,” Gabriel said. “They’re a very strong group and they are a counteract team, and we had to minimize to allow that to happen.”
Waukee’s defensive pressure held Valley scoreless.
“We really worked on our shaping defensively,” Gabriel said.
“This is a very big field here at Valley Stadium, so we had to make sure we had the ability to defend their attack.”
