Haldane volleyball coach Melissa Rossano gave birth to her first daughter, Alexandra, on Monday. She came home from the hospital on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the Blue Devils gave Rossano a nice gift — a 10th consecutive Section 1 title, as they defeated Keio 25-8, 25-13, 25-19 in the Section 1 Class D championship match at Arlington High School.
“It’s been a great week. All good things,” said Rossano, whose daughter sat in a stroller with family next to the bleachers.
Senior Lauren Etta led defending Class D state champion Haldane with eight kills, nine assists, two aces and one dig. Haldane and Keio were tied at 17-17 in the third game before Haldane pulled away. The Blue Devils scored the last four points.
Haldane will face Section 11’s Shelter Island in a state regional today at 5 p.m. at Center Moriches High School.
“I think we’re all really excited about it and we’re excited about the next step,” Etta said. “I think we’re really working together as a team and working hard.”
Kelly Vahos added six kills and six blocks for Haldane, while Katie Cunningham contributed eight aces and four kills. Becky Garrison chipped in with four kills, two aces and five digs. Claudia Percacciolo had seven assists and Gabby Carnabuci added eight digs.
Shizuka Nakashima led Keio with six kills and five digs, while Ryoko Hariyama chipped in with seven digs.
“We had a great season, but we don’t play anybody like this,” Keio coach Kim Martinez said. “They were really nervous and didn’t know what to expect and were too nervous to give it their best.”
