Hoping to move on after their opening season win, the Comes boys basketball team dropped back-to-back heartbreakers as they move to 1-2 for the year.
On Friday, Dec. 7, the Comets, who trailed during most of the game failed to tie the game from the free throw line, missing the front end of a two shot foul seconds before the final buzzer sounded. Lansing Sxton went home with a narrow 41-40 win.
The Big Reds led 9-7 after the first period and by six at the half, 23-17.
Grand Ledge cut the lead to four after three periods of play, 30-26 and outscored the Big Reds, 14-11 in the fourth period before suffering the one point loss.
Zach Artibee paced the offense with 14 points while Cassell Jones also hit double figures with 11. Albert Christensson scored 5, Damonick Hall 4, JT Houghton 2, Jubraun McKinley 3 and Jacob Quain one.
Grand Ledge sank 20 of 32 free throws while Sexton closed with 10 of 22 from the line.
On Tuesday at Grand Ledge the DeWitt Panthers outscored the Comets 19-13 in the fourth period and returned to Panther Land with a 52-47 win.
After trailing 12-10 after the first peirod the two teams scored 10 points each in the second period to find DeWitt clinging to a 22-20 half-time lead.
Grand Ledge rallied to take a three point lead into the final period of play before falling behind in the closing minutes of the game.
Nathan Megge led the Comets in scoring with 11 points while Hall finished with 10. Jones scored 8, Christensson 7, Artibee 6, Tommy Maurer 3 and McKinley 2.
