Long Branch coach Dan George believes losing to Neptune two weeks ago may have been the motivator the Green Wave needed.

After beating Wall 38-6 last week, the Green Wave continued their inspired play on Friday night, trouncing Pinelands 62-0 at home for a nondivisional win.

“That Neptune game was the first loss we’ve had in awhile,” George said. “This group of kids has been starting since the last five games of last year. So, it’s been awhile since they’ve lost and maybe we needed it. It was a little bit of a wake-up call. The kids know what we’re capable of, and we’ve started to show it the last couple weeks.”

Long Branch exploded for 28 first-quarter points. The Green Wave offense churned out 293 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 11 carries and added two more touchdowns through the air. At one point, the Green Wave scored on their first play of a drive six consecutive times.

“We practiced hard for Pinelands,” George said. “But we didn’t expect this.”

Junior running back Deon Williams got Long Branch started early. On the second play of the game, he took a handoff 56 yards up the right sideline for a touchdown. Less than two minutes later, he ran in for another score from 21 yards out. Williams was untouched by a Pinelands defender on both plays.

Senior running back Joscil Jackson also had a big night for the Green Wave. In the first quarter, he sprinted 64 yards up the left side to cap a 28-point first quarter. In the third quarter, he added a 56-yard carry for a score.

Long Branch quarterback Avry Griffin completed 2 of 3 passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. In the first quarter, he rolled out left and connected with senior tight end Christopher Pappayliou for a 19-yard touchdown strike that put Long Branch up 21-0 seven minutes into the game. The play was set up by a 45-yard punt return from senior running back Brett Roach.

In the second quarter, Griffin added to the lead when he found a leaping Trey Smith just in front of the end zone for a 31-yard score.

Also in the second quarter, junior running back Shabazz Shuler scored on a 51-yard touchdown run. In the third quarter, Tyler Gabriel scored on a 23-yard run for the Green Wave’s sixth rushing touchdown.
