Coming off a state championship and a coaching change, it might have seemed that the Greenwood/Granton football team was going to have some early struggles.

But at the end of the season-opening game against Assumption, any questions appeared to be answered.

With a pounding run game and tenacious defense, G/G was able to dominate the line of scrimmage as it rolled to a 38-0 victory Friday at South Wood County Field in Cloverwood Conference play.

“We wanted a smooth transition in coaching and not change much for the kids,” G/G coach Jeff Trunkel said. “We returned our lines and had a new backfield, but with how our line played tonight, the backfield looked veteran.”

The line play by G/G gave it a decided advantage from the onset as it was able to move the ball against the Royals on the first drive — culminating in a 63-yard scamper by quarterback Kole Hinker to take a 6-0 advantage. Hinker struck again later in quarter the from 8 yards, to give Greenwood/Granton a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

Hinker finished with 114 yards on 7 carries and three touchdowns, while fullback Westin Wuethrich led all rushers with 121 yards on 23 carries and added a pair of scores.

G/G finished the game by rolling up 333 yards on 58 carries on the ground, and were just as dominant on the defensive side of the ball.

On defense, G/G smothered the Royals’ rushing attack and limited them to just 8 total yards for the game and just 1 first down- coming in the fourth quarter with less than a minute left in regulation.

“It is so hard to practice at game speed to prepare for the defending state champions against your scout defense,” Assumption coach Jeff Sullivan said. “They have some great players, and we do too, but we have to keep believing, working hard, and keep doing what we need to do.”

Although they finished with so many yards, G/G was only able to break one long run as after the initial run by Hinker, the Royals’ defense was able to contain the outside option, and force the ball to the middle where the linemen were waiting.

With Assumption’s defense attacking, G/G was forced to eat up yardage in short runs, and was able to take a 26-0 lead into halftime on another TD by Hinker and Wuethrich’s first score.

G/G added a score in each quarter in the second half, and put the running clock into effect .

Assumption was led by Zach Linzmeier, who finished with 7 yard.
