Quez Nesbitt rushed for 178 yards and scored three touchdowns as Greer rallied from a 14-0 deficit to top Union County 41-28 in a non-region Class AAA game Friday night.
Union’s Keiston Smith connected on 22 of 37 passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns, including a 20-yarder to T.J. Foster and a 24-yarder to Kalay Jones to give the host Yellow Jackets (1-2) a 14-0 lead.
But Greer (2-1) responded with four consecutive touchdowns to take a 27-14 halftime lead. Quarterback Josh Gentry started the rally with a 51-yard touchdown run, and Timmigo Ballenger followed with a 10-yard interception return to tie the score. Emmanuel Kelly added a 4-yard touchdown run, and Nesbitt scored on a 34 yarder with 3:18 left in the first half.
Union got a 30-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Jones, who had 144 receiving yards on eight catches, to pull to 27-21 late in the third quarter, but that’s as close as Union would get.
Nesbitt added fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 2 and 65 yards to put the game out of reach. He pushed his season rushing total to 708 yards and 13 touchdowns in three games. Gentry added 97 yards rushing on 13 carries for Greer.
Greer is coached by former Clemson player Will Young, Union by former South Carolina player Steve Taneyhill.
