Greg Winkler column: Reflecting as the season ends

As I write today’s article I am reflecting on the 2012 boy’s high school season. It always amazes me how fast the season just flies by, you go from seeing your team six days a week to bumping into them once in awhile in the hallway. This year I had a great group of young men on the team and tonight we will recognize 10 seniors.

The first senior is No. 1 Taylor Schubert. Taylor has played significant time in goal the past two seasons and is a great role model and student.

No. 3 is one of our captains, Jordan Moehn who played in the midfield. Jordan is in a three-way tie for the Golden Boot (the most goals) and enjoying a great senior year. Jordan missed most of his junior year with an injury and has taken advantage of his opportunity this season.

No. 4 is another captain, our sweeper, Jacob Buerger. Jacob is a shut-down defender and was the team leader in minutes last year, this year he is in a position to defend that title. Jacob is another great student and brings a quiet confidence to our defense.

Our next senior is No. 6 Brett Stuck, Brett has played stellar defense this year and is stellar in the classroom as well maintaining a 4.0 throughout his high school career. Brett leads by his play and is ability to communicate with the team.

No. 7 is Dakota Heschke who has played considerable time on defense this season. Dakota works hard everyday and is an example of a true team player, always ready to do what is necessary for the team.

No. 12 is Jacob Miller, an outside midfielder who has also filled in on defense. Jacob adds depth to our team and has been a workhorse this season.

Another outside midfielder is Elliot Pieper, No. 16. Elliot has exploded this season, he has dominated the outside and is also in the hunt for the Golden Boot. Elliot can run all day and is a threat every time he touches the ball.

Kyle Mader, No. 18, is another example of the ultimate teammate. He brings a great work ethic to practice everyday and will play whatever position he is needed at.

No. 20 is Taylor Hoaglin our team manager who has been able to appear in a number of games.

Our final senior is #21 Brennen Davies, the third member chasing the Golden Boot. Brennen did not play last year and is setting the conference on fire after the lay-off. He has been a great addition to this year’s roster.

This team has come along way since Aug. 6. It took them a little while to believe in themselves but they have come together nicely and we are looking forward to a great end of the season run.

We hope you can come out and watch tonight as it is Senior Night. We will also start the WIAA playoffs next Tuesday at home vs. New London at 7 p.m. Come catch some soccer before the winter is upon us and we are all indoors.

Keep on Kickin’
