Gull Lake XC sweeps SMAC East Jamboree

Both the Gull Lake boys’ and girls’ cross country team came away winners at the SMAC East Jamboree on Tuesday.

In the boys’ race at Riverside Elementary, the Blue Devils won with a team score of 34. Sturgis was second with 45, followed by Lakeview in third with 66, Marshall in fourth with 106, Harper Creek in fifth with 137, Coldwater in sixth with 177, Loy Norrix in seventh with 178 and Battle Creek Central in eighth with 209.

Gull Lake was led by Sam Butler’s first-place time of 16-minutes, 22-seconds. Also scoring for the Blue Devils were Sam Sly (third, 16:39), Jeremy Simon (fifth, 16:41), Coleman Gibson (10th, 17:16) and Brian Wiegland (17:29).

Lakeview’s top runners were Blake Wilson (ninth, 17:12), Colin Read (11th, 17:18), Brandon Van Oosten (13th, 17:27), Ben Schimpf (14th, 17:28) and Jon Haadsma (19th, 17:44).

Marshall’s scorers were Kurt Swaton (seventh, 17:05), Parker Cruz (eighth, 17:11), Weston Herman (28th, 18:11), Jon Rose (31st, 18:31) and Cam Ragan (32nd, 18:34).

Harper Creek’s top finishers were Matt Scherer (18th, 17:44), Chris Newburn (22nd, 17:53), Alex Grohalski (26th, 18:10), Paul Hicks (34th, 18:36) and Luke Browne (37th, 18:45).

Coldwater’s scorers were Cameron Leist (16th, 17:35), Josh Evers (36h, 18:44), Josh Norton (38th, 18:51), Shane Dunn (42nd, 19:14) and Adam Clemens (19:28).

BCC’s top runners were Nick Insley (17th, 17:41), Scott Krug (43rd, 19:21), Andrew Larner (46th, 19:36), Mohamed Albagami (50th, 19:52) and Travis Skidmore (53rd, 20:04).

In the girls’ race, Gull Lake won with a score of 40. Marshall was second with a 68, followed by Lakeview in third with 81, Loy Norrix in fourth with 121, Sturgis in fifth with 136, Harper Creek in sixth with 143 and Coldwater in seventh with 147.

The Blue Devils’ top runners were Mikayla Hostetler (second, 19:02), Lily Fell (seventh, 20:01), Leah Coonrod (ninth, 20:31), Kylee Chaffin (10th, 20:33) and Jori Fell (12th, 20:42).

Marshall’s scorers were Brianna Kalisz (fifth, 19:42), Lauren Feasel (eighth, 20:19), Maya Williams (15th, 20:53), Tristen Tobias (19th, 21:16) and Abbey Ufkes (21st, 21:22).

The host Spartans were led by Megan Riegle (sixth, 19:49), Jarecea Tate (11th, 20:33), Mackenzie Wilcox (18th, 21:11), Gillian Colquhoun (20th, 21:19) and Stephanie Niemann (26th, 21:49).

Harper Creek’s top finishers were Ellie Miller (22nd, 21:23), Meghan Schulz (27th, 21:53), Meghann Richards (29th, 22:01), Jessica Carlsen (31st, 22:20) and Haley Burritt (34th, 22:37).

Coldwater was led by Becca Schott’s first-place time of 18:59. Also scoring for the Cardinals were Nataliee Dally (17th, 21:10), Madison Scheetz (42nd, 24:29), Allison Clemens (43rd, 25:28) and Kelly Haskins (44th, 26:02).

VOLLEYBALL

Calhoun Chrsitan 3, Howardsville Christian 2: Calhoun Christian won by scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 21-25 and 15-10. Calhoun Christian (8-1, 3-0 Mid-South Conference) was led by Kelsey Snowball with 22 digs, 10 kills and five blocks. Also for the Cougars, Sarah Butts had 12 assists and nine kills; Rebecca Penrod had 23 digs, 10 aces; AJ Moody had nine kills; Hannah Huling had nine blocks; and Denise Penrod had 13 assists.

Athens 3, (At) Homer 0: Athens won by scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-18.

Athens (17-7-3, 2-0 Big Eight) was led by Chantel Davenport with 13 kills, 19 digs and three blocks. Valerie Rubley had 23 assists and 12 digs; Teasha Swank had eight kills, 10 digs and one block; Allison Fuller had eight digs; Audrey Oswalt had six kills, four digs and one block; and Payton Norton had five kills and two digs.

Homer (9-8, 0-2 Big Eight) was led by Stephanie Osborn with five kills and two blocks. Also for Trojans, Mallori Konkle had four kills; Brooke Ebersole had 15 assists and two aces; and Kristin Nelson had 19 digs.

BOYS’ SOCCER

(At) Lakeview 5, B.C. Central 3: Lakeview’s Austin Anderson scored two goals, while teammates Parker Daniels, Christian Elliott and Matt Garland each scored in the win. Also for the Spartans, Sam Lal and Cole Dopp had an assist apiece, while Jake Herbers made five saves and Cameron Washington-Sain made three saves.

BCC’s Ni Ceu scored two goals, and Bawi Lian Sang had a goal. Francisco Carrillo had two assists and Humberto Martinez had an assist, while Hexxon Villa made 12 saves in goal for the Bearcats (6-6, 2-4 SMAC East).

(At) Coldwater 5, Harper Creek 0: Coldwater’s Yousid Alijabaly and Mohamed Aljabaly had a goal and an assist apiece in the win. Also for the Cardinals (8-2, 5-1 SMAC East), Nooh Aljabaly, Saleh Mousa and Alex Daoud scored, Scout Case had an assist and Ian Wright made seven saves in goal.

(At) Delton Kellogg 3, Maple Valley 0 (Mon.): Delton Kellogg’s Gary Egelkraut, Mark Ordway and Cole Mabie each scored in the KVA victory.

Quincy 3, Jonesville 0 (Mon.): Quincy’s Evan Albright and Igor Batista had a goal and an assist apiece, while Ashton Diott scored and Jake Rider had an assist in the win. Dakota Finley had seven saves in goal for Quincy (8-2-2, 2-1-2 ISL).
