RUTLAND – Jake Ermolovich blocked the potential game-tying extra point in the second half and Colchester escaped with a 21-20 victory over Rutland at Alumni Field Friday night.
The Lakers scored their 21 points in the first half on runs of 7 and 73 yards by David LaCroix and 2 yards by Bobby Brigante and built a 21-7 lead.
Rutland got a 1-yard run by Joe Sullivan before halftime and nearly tied the game in the fourth quarter after a 14-yard pass from Nick Boles to Kyle Arnold, but Ermolovich blocked Scott Crosby’s PAT.
Rutland had two more chances but turned the ball over on downs deep in Colchester territory and fumbled away the ball on its last possession.
LaCroix had 158 of the 4-2 Lakers’ 285 rushing yards. Boles completed 16-of-31 passes for 195 yards for the 4-2 Raiders. Luke Mullin had a 14-yard scornig run for the Raiders, who saw their three-game winning streak broken.
* Bellows Falls 55, North Country 20: Zachary Rawling and Carson Fullam each scored three touchdowns as Bellows Falls surged in the second half to pick up a Divison II win at North Country.
Rawling finished with 218 yards on 11 carries for the 5-1 Terriers.
Jacob Buckles threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns to pace NCU (0-6). Trailing just 21-14 late in the first half, the Falcons turned the ball over on down on the 3-yard line before Bellows Falls took over in the second half.
* Milton 39, Fair Haven 37: Cole Reilly hit Chris McClellan for two touchdowns in the second half as Milton won a high-scoring game against Fair Haven.
With the Slaters leading 30-26 Reilly shook off a hard hit on the pass rush and found McClellan in the back of the end zone on third down for a 10-yared TD strike at 6:04 of the third period to push Milton into the lead.
Reilly then connected with McClellan again on fourth down with a 19-yard TD pass with 1:03 remaining in the game.
McClellan ended up with three touchdowns, while Geoff Gadbois added a 14-yard TD run, Ethan Lawrence chipped in a 27-yard touchdown ramble and Jonah Blatt added a 65-yard touchdown scamper.
Milton piled up 373 yards with 321 coming on the ground. Blatt led the way with 119 yards on 20 carries, while Gadbois contributed 87 yards on 16 carries.
Fair Haven racked up 323 yardes but 230 came in the first half and 195 came through the air. Andrew Reid was 9 of 19 for the 195 yards, while Dakota Euber led the rushing attack with 99 yards on nine carries.
Milton improved to 4-2, while Fair Haven fell to 3-3.
