Stanley Garrant is a rising freshman on the Spackenkill High School varsity golf team.
Garrant helped Spackenkill to a second-place finish in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League last year and was one of three Spartans to qualify for the Section 9 tournament.
Here is Stanley’s take on the 2012 season and a look at his background with golf, as well as some of his other interests:
How did you get into golf and when did you first start playing?
My dad was the one who got me into golf. I started playing competitively when I was 5 and I played in the U.S. Kids Tour. I started playing varsity golf for Spackenkill in seventh grade. I started off in the fifth spot and worked my way up to the second spot.
What do you enjoy most about playing golf?
I just love the sport. I’ve been doing it my whole life. It’s just my sport.
What is your favorite course you play in the area?
The Dutchess Golf & Country Club. I’m a member and I have been playing there since last fall. My favorite hole is probably the fourth hole. It’s a challenging hole, about 450 yards from the blue and a par four. It’s a challenging hole with trees to the right and a pond on the left.
What are your expectations for the 2012 season?
I think we are going to have a good year. I want to try to work my way up to the one spot and shoot in the mid- to high-30s on a regular basis.
Who is your favorite professional golfer in the world right now?
Tiger Woods. He’s just a great golfer, although I think he was better before the incident. I could tell he was always focused on the course, and he could make shots that no one else could. I’ve always looked up to him as a player.
Do you play any other sports?
I play basketball, and I plan to play on the JV team this year. I’ve been playing basketball since I was about 5 years old but I like golf a bit more.
What is your favorite pregame meal?
A hamburger or hotdog — nothing heavy, just a snack.
What music do you listen to before playing to get pumped up?
Hip-hop rap. Jay-Z is probably my favorite artist right now and “No Church in the Wild” is my favorite song of his.
How is it having a father that is a coach? Does he ever give you any helpful tips? (Mr. Garrant coaches varsity track and field and modified football at Spackenkill).
Well, there is always a lot of sports talk. It’s good. I like that I get to learn more about other sports. He plays golf too, and works with me on my swing and helps me out a lot.
