H.S. roundup: CVU, Essex earn tournament wins



Champlain Valley and Essex collected high school boys soccer wins in the opening round of the Essex tournament Thursday night.

CVU dispatched Rice 6-0 in the opener before Essex grabbed a 5-3 win over Rutland in an annual invitational that resumes Saturday.

In the first game, Max Brown notched a goal and an assist to pace CVU. Joe Castano, Shane Haley, Patrick McCue, Ian Kent and Kidder Spillane rounded out the Redhawks’ scoring and Brandon O’Connell made two saves.

Rice’s Connor Gorman made a dozen saves for Rice.

In the second game, Rijad Mezetovic tallied three goals and an assist for an Essex team that built a 4-0 lead. Beny Kiesse had the other goal and Dan Palker made four saves for the Hornets (2-0).

Richard Baccie scored twice for Rutland.

* Missisquoi 1, North Country 0: Matt St. Amour deposited a penalty kick in the 30th minute for the only goal in Missisquoi’s win at North Country.

Eamon Murphy worked a two-save shutout for MVU while NCU’s Logan Fortier and Ryan Paul combined to make four saves.

* Cabot 3, United Christian 2, OT: Darren Celley tallied in overtime to lift Cabot over visiting United Christian.

Lars Hammer scored the other two goals for Cabot and Adlai Feldman made three saves.

Justin Limoges and Ji Kim scored for UCA.

Girls soccer

* Woodstock 2, Fair Haven 0: Katie Leavitt and Annie Arther connected on first-half tallies to send host Woodstock past Fairhaven.

Lizzy Miller worked a seven-save shutout for the Wasps (1-1).

* Richford 4, Winsooki 3: Emma Marchessault fired in three goals to send visiting Richford past Winooski on Wednesday night.

Lauren Marshia recorded the go-ahead tally for Richford in the 73rd minute.

Christina Dang knocked in Winooski’s first two goals while Avah Eaton rounded out the Spartans’ scoring.

Field hockey

* North Country 3, St. Johnsbury 0: Brittany Verge, Brittany Fortier and Mariah Roberts tallied first-half goals to power North Country past visiting St. Johnsbury.

Fortier and Roberts goals came 15 seconds apart and Danielle Gabucci made three saves for the shutout.

Bea Brody turned back seven shots for SJA.
