Brett Perry got a takedown in overtime to win by decision, though his John Jay High School wrestling team lost to visiting Putnam Valley, 43-31, on Tuesday.
John Messinger, a Section 1 small-schools champion at 170 pounds last season, and Perry traded escapes through three periods, sending their 182-pound match into the extra session.
“Brett just hung in tough, and he always seems to come through when the matches go into overtime,” John Jay coach Jamie Weaver said. “He’s like the overtime king.”
The “king” didn’t surrender his crown this day.
Within the first minute of overtime, Perry earned two points for the match’s lone takedown, claiming a 3-1 victory.
“He basically read the match the right way,” Perry said. “They were both being aggressive, but also good on the defensive side, too. It was little like a game of chess.”
Depleted by injury in several weight classes, including 2011 Poughkeepsie Journal Wrestler of the Year Dale White at 160 pounds, John Jay also received victories from Randy Earl, who pinned his opponent in 3:55 at 99 pounds, and Ronny McCabe, who won a 9-1 major decision at 145 pounds.
John Jay (1-7) also won three matches via forfeit.
