Hamilton could be playing national power De La Salle next 2 football seasons

Chandler Hamilton football coach Steve Belles said that there is a chance his team could be playing California power De La Salle the next two seasons in a home-and-home. He said he didn’t know if Hamilton would travel to California next season or playing at home. That still is getting worked out.

But Hamilton is starting to get a jump on the next two-year scheduling block. It would make for an exciting matchup of two of the states’ more prominent football programs.

Hamilton (9-2) plays host to Phoenix Desert Vista (8-3) on Friday night in a Division I quarterfinal, trying to make amends to last year’s state championship loss.

De La Salle is currently 10-0 and starts the playoffs next week.

Hamilton beat Desert Vista this regular season but it’s not payback from last season until Hamilton beats Desert Vista in the playoffs. Last year, Desert Vista embarrassed Hamiton in the final with a dominating performance, winning 45-19 and ending Hamilton’s 54-game winning streak.

"This is much more important, because it’s win or go home," Belles said.

Last year, defensive tackle Jaxon Hood (now at Arizona State) was playing in the final on an injured foot and Hamilton didn’t have defensive end Qualen Cunningham, who is now a junior having a standout season. Cunningham suffered an injury that kept him out of the playoffs last year.

"We’ve got everyone healthy," Belles said.
