Hamilton, Salpointe, Coronado still top teams: New boys soccer rankings

Hamilton, Salpointe Catholic and Coronado keep their place at the top of their respective divisions.

But there has been some movement after the first two weeks of the season.

Rankings as of Thursday, Dec. 6 :

NOTE: Previous ranking in parentheses. X- unranked. Thursday, Dec. 6 matches are not accounted for in rankings below. Tournament results are accounted for.

DIVISION I
1. Hamilton (1) — 5-0 to start season. Faces Chandler Thursday night in Diablos semis.
2. Brophy Prep (2) — 3-0 with 1-0 win over Tolleson and 6-0 win vs. Chaparral. Annual rivalry match at Salpointe Catholic is next on Dec. 10.
3. Tolleson (3) — Four wins since season-opening loss to Brophy, including win over Maryvale. Plays Ironwood in Friday’s Bulldog Invite semifinals.
4. Carl Hayden (4) — 1-0 after win over Cesar Chavez. Takes on host Central Friday.
5. San Luis (7) — Jumps up after Gilbert and Maryvale move down. 2-0 on season.
6. Ironwood (9) — 4-0. Big match vs. Tolleson in Bulldog semis.
7. Desert Vista (8) — 5-1. Bounced back from loss to Mesa, now in Diablos semis vs. Corona.
8. Gilbert (5) — 4-1 after loss to Red Mountain in Diablos pool play. Misses tourney semifinals.
9. Trevor Browne (X) — Jumps into rankings with a 3-0 start to season, including wins over Maryvale, Westview and Millennium.
10. Maryvale (6) — 1-2 after losses to Tolleson and Trevor Browne.

Dropped out: Chaparral (9)

DIVISION II
1. Salpointe Catholic (1) — Stays at No. 1. Lost to Catalian Foothills in Brandon Bean final but got revenge in power-point match. 10-1 on season.
2. Verrado (4) — 1-0. Jumps up after Catalina Foothills’ and Notre Dame Prep’s early struggles.
3. Catalina Foothills (3) — 5-1-2, two draws vs. CDO and Sahuaro. Won Brandon Bean tourney.
4. Washington (6) — 5-0. Faces strong Thunderbird squad in Moon Valley tourney semis on Friday.
5. Notre Dame Prep (2) –5-1-1. Missed out on Moon Valley tourney semifinals after loss to Thunderbird and tie vs. Tempe.
6. Thunderbird (X) — Jumps into rankings. 5-0. Will have to prove its ranking vs. Washington in Moon Valley tourney semi.
7. Greenway (8) — 3-2. Lost to Pinnacle and Washington in Moon Valley tourney. Misses semifinals.
8. Apollo (5) — 2-2 after losses to NDP and North.
9. Mohave (9) — 3-2. Went 1-2 in Bradshaw Mountain tourney.
t-10. Nogales (7) — 3-3-1 — Lost to CDO to start season, other two losses to Salpointe and Catalina Foothills in Brandon Beane. One more slip from any of the bottom 3 and the likes of Cactus Shadows, North, Campo Verde and/or Flagstaff could snatch up a spot.

Dropped out: Marcos de Niza (10)

DIVISION III
1. Coronado (1) — 4-0 and cruising along. Swatted first real test, 5-0 vs. Fountain Hills.
2. Cortez (2) — 3-0. First test won’t come until Tuesday vs. Northwest Christian. 42 goals scored already.
3. Douglas (3) — 4-1-1 after tie with Nogales and loss to Salpointe in Brandon Beane quarters.
4. Northwest Christian (5) — 4-0. Started season with nice 3-2 win over Cactus. Cortez is next.
5. Seton Catholic (4) — 1-0-1. Surprise tie vs. Horizon Honors before win vs. Valley Christian.
6. Cactus (6) — 1-1. Beat North Pointe Prep 8-2.
7. Williams Field (X) — 4-0. Impressive in the early going.
8. Tucson Palo Verde (7) — 4-2. Losses coming in Brandon Beane tourney to teams in higher divisions.
t-9. Cottonwood Mingus (9) — 1-1. Loss and win vs. Bradshaw Mountain.
t-9. Bradshaw Mountain (X) — 5-1. Finished third at own tourney.
