Fort Pierce Central left Viera still winless after handing the Hawks a 34-0 defeat on the efforts of two 100-yard rushers Friday night.

With a dominant defensive effort, Fort Pierce Central was able to overcome six fumbles, two of which were lost, and hold Viera to just 65 yards of total offense. Fort Pierce Central also recovered two Viera fumbles and an onside kick late in the game.

Viera struggled to contain Fort Pierce Central quarterback Sam Vaughn, who ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Marcus Levy, who ran for 107 yards and one touchdown. Viera’s leading performer, Taylor Streeter, gained just 27 yards on 16 carries.

After two first-half touchdowns by Vaughn, Fort Pierce Central ran away with the game, adding three touchdowns in the final half of play, despite having another onside kick recovery and 50-yard touchdown run called back on penalties.

KEY PLAYERS: Vaughn rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 121 yards. Levy rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown, and had 20 receiving yards.

THEY SAID IT: “I thought we did not play to the level of our ability. Their coach did a good job of screwing up our mental game a little bit, playing music that we weren’t used to and slowing the game down,” Fort Pierce Central coach Joshua Shaffer said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Viera hosts Melbourne at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Fort Pierce Central has a bye.

RECORDS: Viera is 0-5 overall (0-1 in Class 7A, District 12), Fort Pierce Central is 5-0 (1-0 in Class 7A, District 12).
