Heritage rolls over Titusville, 48-7

PALM BAY For all the tip-toeing that was going on in the mud Monday night, Heritage certainly did look like a team on solid footing.
It wasn’t always that way. Three years ago, the Panthers gave up seven touchdowns in the program’s first game on a night when defenders failed to wrap up and often gave up.
On Monday, the Heritage High defense was dominant in a 48-7 win over Titusville, the Panthers improving to 2-0 with Harmony visiting this Friday.
“We have come a long way,” said Heritage coach Ajay Ulmer, who joined the team in its second season. “Our kids have matured, and that’s a big part of it. But, I tell you, the main thing is the work ethic and also this coaching staff I have.”
Heritage scored on three runs, two passes, a blocked punt and a fumble return.
The game had been postponed Friday night after four plays when lightning struck nearby. By game time Monday — delayed another 30 minutes by more lightning — the field was mushy, and footing was bad.
“Every time you wanted to cut, you had to slow down and then cut,” Panthers quarterback Clinton Moxam said. “I was slowing down so much.”
Moxam scored on the team’s first play, through 45 yards of cutting and dancing. He scrambled past the defense and slowly picked his way to the end zone while blocker Tyris Wooten cleared the way, half blocking and half dancing with a backpedaling Terriers defender unable to commit in the mud.
Just before the end of the first period, Aaron Wolfe came untouched and blocked a punt on a Titusville fourth down from its 40. He picked the ball up at the 18 and ran into the end zone.
Shortly after Kalil Owens forced a fumble at the 43, Josh Gaines scored from the 25 — making it 20-0 — and Shaquille Jones followed a minute later, picking up a fallen lateral and going 28 yards to the end zone.
A day after his birthday, Shane Jones celebrated by recovering three Titusville fumbles, including the one Owens created. He harkened back to his youth for advice.
“Back in Little League, my dad used to tell me to go and get the ball, so I went and got the ball,” Jones said.
Moxam added touchdown passes to Gaines (26 yards) and Wooten (44), and Owens added a 7-yard run.
Titusville scored the first points against the Panthers this year with 10:50 to play when Tommy Cobb ran in from the 19.
