One year ago, Wausau East’s Alex Schremp, Wausau West’s Matt Sandquist and Mosinee’s Kyle Kolberg could have gone and watched the WIAA state golf tournament if they so chose.
This year, the three will get to experience playing in the final tournament of the season today and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison.
Schremp and Sandquist qualified as individuals in Division 1, while Kolberg will play as an individual in Division 2.
Sandquist finished tied for second at the Marshfield sectional with a 79, while Schremp was one shot back in fourth overall. That was a reversal from the Antigo regional, where Schremp was the medalist with a 74 and Sandquist placed fifth with a 79.
The two have dueled all season in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and then through the regional and sectional rounds. Sandquist took second in the WVC individual race, while Schremp was fourth.
Kolberg advanced with a fourth-place finish at the Marinette regional with a 77, then was third overall at the Little Chute sectional with an 80. Mosinee’s team played in the sectional, but missed a bid to the state tournament by seven strokes.
The Wausau-area trio won’t be the only local players facing the best in the state, however.
Wisconsin Rapids’ Joe Benbow qualified as an individual in Division 1, while Pacelli’s Steven Maes and Assumption’s Quinn Hartley will play in the Division 2 tournament. Also, the Stevens Point Area Senior High team will play in the Division 1 tournament after winning regional and sectional title.
