High school football: Ankeny gives coach 300th career victory against Marshalltown

By

Ankeny, Ia. — Drew Carlson received a gift when he lived his dream of playing football for Ankeny.
On Friday, he delivered one, too.
Carlson caught two touchdown passes and No. 3-ranked Ankeny beat Marshalltown 49-14 on Friday in Ankeny coach Jerry Pezzetti’s 300th win at the program.
Like his father, Luke, Carlson played for Pezzetti. Like his older brothers, he’s never remembered not wanting to play for his school.
“Ever since I was born,” Carlson said. “I’ve always wanted to play for the Hawks.”
The senior receiver finished the season-opener at Ankeny Stadium with four catches for 143 yards, scoring on plays of 46 and 38 yards.
Ankeny’s Joel Lanning and Marshalltown’s Blake Gimbel squared off in a battle between two of the state’s top quarterbacks.
They combined for 716 yards and five touchdowns through the air.
Lanning connected on 11 of 25 attempts for 311 yards and three scores. He also ran for a touchdown.
Gimbel, who set the state single-season passing yardage record last fall, completed 42 of 61 for 405 yards and two touchdowns.
Carlson celebrated on the sidelines with his father, a trainer for the team.
The Hawks led 28-0 at halftime.
Pezzetti was interviewed after the game while happy students chanted, “Jerry! Jerry!”
He has a 300-130-1 record at Ankeny. His overall coaching record is 358-142-1 in 50 seasons.
Pezzetti took his 300th win in stride.
“It’s the first win,” Pezzetti said. “That’s what it’s all about. Marshalltown’s a very good team. We know it’s early and we have to get better.”
With a minute left in the game and Ankeny leading 42-14, the public address announcer told the fans of Pezzetti’s milestone.
Hawk running back Ian Begg ran for an 81-yard touchdown on the play that immediately followed.
“They’re always well-coached, they’re always well-disciplined,” Marshalltown coach Dave Holdiman said.
Pezzetti has had 22 playoff teams. His 1997 Hawks won a state championship.
“It’s really special to win it for him,” Carlson said. “We know how hard he and the other coaches work, and we know how much it means to him.”
Lanning ran 12 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. He hit Carlson for a 46-yard touchdown and Sam Pickard for a 49-yard score in the second quarter.
