ST. XAVIER (8-5)

ST. XAVIER (8-5)

* Coach: Mike Glaser (31st season, 328-73).

* Starters back: Offense 6, defense 7.

* Class: 6-A. District: 4.

* Player to watch: Junior running back Charles Walker (5-11, 181) rushed for 671 yards and six touchdowns last year, and Glaser believes he could become a top candidate for Mr. Football honors in 2013. “He always gets positive yards,” Glaser said. “He has a body lean, and when there’s contact made he’s spinning and fighting for extra yards. And he reads things so well.”

* Other top players: QB Austin Gahafer (Sr.); RB Austin Davis (Jr.); RB Treyveon Percell (Jr.); WR Brandon Moore (Sr.); TE Tyler Polston (Sr.); OL Troy Hart (Sr.); OL Joe Dawson (Sr.); DL Karl Roesler (Sr.); LB Deonte Clyburn (Sr.); DB Lemondray Clemons (Sr.); DB Patrick Sermersheim (Sr.); DB Dekota Jones (Jr.).

* Outlook: Glaser has announced this will be his final season as the Tigers’ coach and is determined to go out with a bang. Gahafer is a pure pocket passer, and Glaser said he’s scrapped much of his traditional option offense with the intent of getting the ball to Walker, Davis, Percell and Moore. Roesler and Clyburn are major-college prospects who will lead the defense. Glaser has moved some of his fastest players, like Clemons, to defense in an attempt to counter the speed of main rival Trinity. “I expect big things from this football team,” Glaser said. “I think we’ll be in the hunt.”

SOUTHERN (4-7)

* Coach: Corey Crume (4th season, 7-26).

* Starters back: Offense 4, defense 3.

* Class: 6-A. District: 3.

* Player to watch: Senior wide receiver Deon Yelder (6-3, 195) has a big frame and is a big-time downfield threat for the Trojans. “He has great hands going over his head and catching the deep balls,” Crume said. “He’s a speedster with a good stride. He’s the one person everybody looks up to.”

* Other top players: QB John Marshall (Jr.); RB Jawon Malone (Jr.); RB Desmond Hill (Jr.); OL Micah Lagowski (Jr.); OL/LB Thomas Noe (Sr.); LB Carlos Catalon (Sr.); S Donte Smith (Sr.).

* Outlook: The Trojans started 4-2 last year but lost their final five games and now must replace 16 players who were lost to graduation. There are only six seniors on the roster this year. “We have a lot of young guys who will be learning as they go along,” Crume said. “We have to teach them what it takes to win football games.” Hill is in his first season with the Trojans but could emerge as the top running back, Crume said.

S. OLDHAM (6-5)

S. OLDHAM (6-5)

* Coach: Jamie Reed (3rd season, 13-9).

* Starters back: Offense 4, defense 2.

* Class: 5-A, District 5.

* Players to watch: Senior QB Jack Sherry. The 6-5 Sherry passed for 1,722 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2011 and also kicked three field goals and 43 extra points. “The Ivy League schools and some lower-division schools are interested in him,” Reed said.

* Other top players: RB Dallas Banks (Sr.), WR-FS Kyle Young (Jr.).OL-DL Chris Figg (Jr.), OL-LB Daniel Young (Jr.), OL-LB Shane Smith (Jr.), OL Tom Singer (Sr.), WR Tony Brackens (Sr.), WR-DB Davis Culbertson (Jr.).

* Outlook: The Dragons graduated 16 seniors and will be inexperienced in a lot of positions, but Reed is high on Sherry and some other players. Banks played running back in the last three games of 2011 and was an all-region choice at defensive back for the second straight season. Young is a basketball player in his first year of football. Reed thinks Young could be the “next big player around here. He’s a super athlete. Our team is really unknown, but our talent level won’t hurt us.”

SPENCER CO. (5-7)

SPENCER CO. (5-7)

* Coach: Mike Marksbury (2nd season, 5-7).

* Starters back: Offense 6, defense 9.

* Class: 4-A, District 3.

* Player to watch: QB Trent Holbrook. He ran for more than 400 yards and passed for more than 700 yards with nine TD passes and no interceptions in 2011. As a free safety on defense, Holbrook intercepted eight passes last year. “Trent will be a college prospect as a defensive back,” Marksbury said.

* Other top players: TE-DE Chris Dunbar (Sr.), OT William Currie (Sr.), LB Dalton Goodlett (Sr.), FB Will Eldridge (Sr.), RB Cody Chesser (Sr.), RB-DL Chase Smith (Sr.), WR-DB Shawn Boykin (Jr.).

* Outlook: Marksbury inherited a program that was 0-19 when he took the job last season, but the Bears went 5-7 in 2011 and recorded the school’s first playoff victory (over Doss). “We’re building a program,” Marksbury said. “We have size (Dunbar is 6-4, 250; Currie 6-3, 305) and a large senior class (18). We have 6-10 players who could play in college. We want to be competitive in our district.”

TRINITY (14-0)

TRINITY (14-0)

* Coach: Bob Beatty (13th season, 154-21).

* Starters back: Offense 3, defense 5.

* Class: 6-A. District: 4.

* Player to watch: On a team full of stars, senior wide receiver James Quick is the front-runner for Kentucky’s Mr. Football award this season. The 6-2, 185-pounder had 82 catches for 1,434 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. Quick has several scholarship honors and lists Louisville, Ohio State, Oregon, Kentucky and Cincinnati in his top five.

* Other top players: QB Travis Wright (Sr.); RB Dalyn Dawkins (Sr.); QB/WR Reggie Bonnafon (Jr.); WR Donald Brooks (So.); OL Mitchell Wessel (Sr.); DE Jason Hatcher (Sr.); DL Jabari Jordan (Sr.); LB Daeshawn Bertram (Sr.); CB Ryan White (Sr.); CB Trey Wright (Sr.).

* Outlook: After finishing No. 1 in four national rankings last season, Trinity is expected to accomplish big things again this year. The offensive trio of Wright, Dawkins and Quick is outstanding, and Bonnafon and Brooks are primed to emerge as stars this season. Bonnafon, the backup quarterback, already has scholarship offers from Louisville and Illinois. The key will be whether an entirely new offensive line can develop. The defense is strong, with Hatcher (Southern California) and White (Vanderbilt) having already committed to colleges. Another undefeated season against a tough schedule will be tough, but a third straight state title is expected.

VALLEY (4-7)

VALLEY (4-7)

* Coach: Preston King (2nd season).

* Starters back: Offense 5, defense 7.

* Class: 4-A. District: 4.

* * Player to watch: Junior Robert Jones (6-2, 175) moves from wide receiver to quarterback and drew the attention of college scouts while attending summer camps at Vanderbilt and Kentucky. “He has a good, strong arm and is starting to get comfortable in the pocket,” King said. “He potentially could be a big-time prospect.”

* Other top players: RB/LB Kevonte Mitchell (Jr.); WR Jacobi Rucker (Sr.); WR James Howard (Sr.); WR/LB Tyler Oates (Jr.); OL Steven Jones (Sr.); OL Tim Biery (Sr.); DL Treshawn Macklin (Jr.); LB Nick Rogers (Sr.); LB Keith Zelch (Sr.); LB Devin Allen (So.).

* Outlook: Jones could have a big year and has three solid receivers in Rucker, Howard and Oates. “We’ve got some basketball players out there at receiver, and that helps,” King said. “We hadn’t been getting basketball players in the past.” Mitchell will be the featured back and will get 15-20 carries per game, King said. Four starters are back on the offensive line. Oates is the top returning tackler (36 solos) for a defense that struggled last year, allowing 31.3 points per game.

WAGGENER (2-9)

WAGGENER (2-9)

* Coach: Daniel McDonald (1st season).

* Starters back: Offense 3, defense 5.

* Class: 4-A, District 3.

* Player to watch: RB-CB Marquis Nelson (Jr.). “Marquis has been my hardest worker,” McDonald said. “He’s a leader on and off the field. He has great speed and all the tools to be successful.”

* Other top players: OL-DL Wes Ford (Sr.), OL-DL Davian Ford (Jr.), OL-DL Jalen Williams (Sr.), QB-SS Tyrone Stallard (Sr.), RB-LB Chris Henderson (Sr.), LB-DE Aaron Partee (So.), OL-LB Kyle Kleitz (Sr.).

* Outlook: McDonald, 23, was an assistant at Bullitt East last season and is probably the youngest head coach in Kentucky. The former Waggener player has put in a new spread offense and changed to a 4-3 defense. “We’re pretty fast, and we want to take advantage of our speed,” he said. “Our guys are committed to turning this thing around, and I’m proud of them for that.”

WESTERN (7-6)

WESTERN (7-6)

* Coach: Torrey Shinholster (first season).

* Starters back: Offense 5, defense 6.

* Class: 4-A. District: 4.

* Player to watch: Senior tailback Doreon Gordon (6-1, 230) is a big, powerful runner. “We call him a fast fullback,” Shinholster said. “We plan on getting him the ball 20 to 25 times a game.” He’ll also be a leader on defense at linebacker.

* Other top players: WR/DB Dion Sutton (Sr.); WR Ryan Love (Jr.); OL/DE Chris McGraw (Jr.); LB Antonio Turner (Sr.); TE/DE Mike Rouson (Sr.); FS Travon Harrison (Jr.).

* Outlook: Shinholster has been a long-time assistant at Western and became head coach when LaVell Boyd left for the Seneca job. The Warriors have played for the regional title each of the past three years, reaching the state semifinals in 2010, but lost a lot of talent to graduation. Still, Shinholster is confident his team can make another deep postseason run. “We have a very fast team … speedy on offense and defense,” he said.
