CHIPPEWA FALLS — The D.C. Everest softball team saw its 2012 season end Thursday at the same place, to the same team and at the same spot as last year — the sectional final.
Chippewa Falls scored six runs in the first two innings and then relied on Amanda Jaquish’s arm en route to a 7-0 victory over the Evergreens in a WIAA Division 1 sectional final.
Chippewa Falls beat DCE 2-1 in eight innings in last season’s sectional final.
After losing seven starters from last season’s team, few expected the Evergreens (16-10) to be much of a threat this year at the state level.
“I’m not the type of guy who wants to take a step back, then move forward,” said fourth-year Everest coach Mike Mathies on this year’s team avoiding a rebuilding season. “We ended our season right where we ended it last year, and we only had three (girls) from the batting order in last year’s sectional final in the lineup this year. This group has come a long way.
“I would say (the girls) over-achieved this year. They didn’t want to not play well.”
Chippewa Falls jumped on Everest with two runs in the first, but the major damage was done in the second — with two outs.
After retiring the first two batters, Chippewa Falls had a pair of singles off Everest senior Megan Mathies and followed with back-to-back home runs by Evie Schaller and Kayla Bowe. Schaller finished the game with two home runs and Sarah Sorensen added a double.
With the game in control, especially after adding a seventh run in the third, Jaquish threw strikes and the Evergreens struggled finding holes, collecting just two hits and striking out seven times.
Juniors Alayna Krejci and Emily Bruns had Everest’s hits, both singles.
“I was pretty surprised we didn’t hit the ball better,” said Mathies. “I think our inexprience in a game like that came out.”
