High School Notebook: Center Grove soccer coach Phil Orlando calls it a career

By

Center Grove High School boys soccer coach Phil Orlando figured this was a good time to call it a career.

The Trojans, who won 13 sectionals in Orlando’s 14 seasons, reached the semistate final for the first time in his tenure this season, losing to Columbus North to finish 18-3-1 on the season.

“This was my year,” Orlando said.

Orlando, 64, said he needs to spend more time with his business, Avon Sports Apparel, and grandchildren. Orlando has coached for 31 years, 23 at the high school level. Orlando previously was the Avon girls coach for six seasons and coached the Brebeuf Jesuit boys for three. Orlando had a 193-70-24 record at Center Grove and was 260-123-92 overall.

“The 14 years at Center Grove has been a highlight,” Orlando said. “I love the kids and the parents. I love the school. When you work for a guy named (athletic director) Jon Zwitt, you are working for the best of the best. I couldn’t even consider working for anyone else. He wants everyone to be successful and he does everything he can to make his coaches successful.”

Galullo picked for game

North Central senior soccer player Michael Galullo, who has committed to Indiana University, has been selected to play the All-American game in Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 8. The other Indiana player selected was Evansville Memorial’s Michael Vieth. Galullo, who had 12 goals and eight assists for the Panthers this season, is graduating early and will enroll at IU in January.

Etc.

Former Hamilton Southeastern DE Randy Gregory has committed to Nebraska. Gregory, a sophomore for Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz., signed with Purdue out of high school but had to go to junior college to meet academic requirements. The 6-5, 235-pound Gregory de-committed from Purdue last week. Gregory broke the fibula in his left leg after the first game this season and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Indiana Fever guard Katie Douglas, a former Perry Meridian High School standout, will be honored for her accomplishments at the Falcons’ home girls basketball game with Decatur Central tonight. The ceremony will take place before the varsity game, which will follow the 6 p.m. junior varsity game. The Fever won the WNBA championship last month. . . . The Johnson County girls basketball tournament begins Tuesday at home sites. If Center Grove advances to the semistate in football, games scheduled for Nov. 16 will be played Nov. 15.
