The games must go on.
Given the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, though, it’s uncertain when many playoff contests in Section 1 and Section 9 will be made up after being postponed Monday and Tuesday.
“I have a feeling things are going to be pushed back another day,” Arlington athletic director David Goddard said early Tuesday afternoon, though he hadn’t heard any official word from Section 1 officials.
For a second straight day postseason games in both sections were postponed.
Municipalities in Westchester County received more damage from Sandy than many towns in Dutchess and many Westchester schools are closed today. As per Section 1 rules, if one school in a playoff bracket can’t play today, no team in that bracket will play today.
Arlington’s field hockey team, for example, will not play its Section 1 playoff game at Mahopac because the Indians do not have classes today.
Calls to Jennifer Simmons, the executive director of Section 1, were not returned but there will be no Section 1 boys soccer action today.
Just one playoff game had been rescheduled as of Tuesday afternoon. In Section 9, SUNY New Paltz will host the boys Class A semifinal between New Paltz and Wallkill on Thursday at noon. The Section 9 field hockey tournament will begin Thursday at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton.
The remainder of the Section 9 slate will largely depend on whether or not certain schools have classes today.
“We have a whole host of games scheduled for (today). Whether or not they’ll happen, no one really knows,” said Section 9 volleyball chairperson Toni Woody, who said given Sandy’s impact throughout the region, reaching sectional officials and coaches on Tuesday was challenging.
With those communication difficulties, let alone questions surrounding which schools would or would not have classes today, Woody said today’s schedule remained in limbo.
“It’s just too early to figure it out,” she said. “All I can say is, games that can be played (today) will be played.”
