High school roundup: Express wrestling team tops Ithaca

Ithaca 145-pounder Julian Korfine upset Curtis Grant, 7-5 in overtime, to highlight the Little Red’s 56-21 loss at Elmira on Wednesday in Southern Tier Athletic Conference wrestling at Southside High School.

Other Ithaca winners included Collin Shippos (106 pounds), Richie Burke (138) Ian Van Valen (152). Charlie Mahon (120), Jacob Wandell (132), Anton Brown (160), Mitch Mcgowan (170), Luke Jackson (195) and Sean McGinley (285) won matches on the mat for the Express, which also won four by forfeit.

“We got a big lift from our seniors in Sean McGinley and Luke Jackson,” Elmira coach Dave Guyette said. “Also a huge win by seventh-grader Charlie Mahon and ninth-grader Jacob Wandell.”

Korfine defeated Grant, last year’s Section 4 Division I champion at 132 pounds. Grant is ranked No. 1 in the section this year at 138, but wrestled up a weight class on Wednesday.

Shippos pinned Elmira’s Noah Carpenter in 59 seconds to get the Little Red on the board. Burke — who won his 100th career match on Nov. 24 at the Cortland Duals — scored a 9-0 major decision over the Express’ Conner Wilson. And Van Valen won by technical fall over Evan Rathbun (15-0).

Ithaca (3-3) heads back to Elmira this weekend for the annual Elmira City School District Wrestling Tournament, slated for Saturday at Elmira Free Academy. Competition begins at 10 a.m.
