High School Roundup: Flaherty, Mabrey combine to lead Point Beach


Junior point guard Katelynn Flaherty scored a career-high 40 points and sophomore guard Marina Mabrey added a career-high 34 as Point Pleasant Beach girls basketball team, ranked No. 7 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10, defeated Mater Dei, 91-68, on Monday night in a Shore Conference Class B Central game.

Flaherty, who shot 15-for-25 from the floor, also added 11 rebounds, six of which were offensive rebounds She also had six steals and five assists. Flaherty had 17 points in the second quarter and 23 in the first half.

Mabrey, who was 9-for-24 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, added 21 rebounds, 11 of which were offensive rebounds. She had 24 points in the first half, 12 in each of the first two quarters. Mabrey also had five assists.

Flaherty and Mabrey combined for 47 of Point Beach’s 49 first-half points.

Point Beach is at St. Rose Thursday night in a game for early supremacy in Class B Central. St. Rose has not lost a Class B Central game since the 2002-2003 season.

MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 50, CENTRAL 44: Dana Carbone scored 16 of her game-high 23 points in the first half, Kelly Milana added 12 points and the Griffins (1-1, 1-1) used a 16-8 fourth quarter to defeat the Golden Eagles (0-1, 0-1) in a key early season Class B South contest.

The tide turned when Central junior guard Brianne Allender fouled out with about six minutes to play. At one point late in the game, Monsignor Donovan’s Sam Stazko knocked down jumpers on consecutive possessions to extend to a five-point lead.

PINELANDS 30, MANCHESTER 29: Junior guard Gabby Melo scored six of her right points in the fourth quarter, including a layup with four seconds left to break a 28-all tie and send the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0) to a Class B South victory.

KEANSBURG 35, HENRY HUDSON 33: Kim McNelis scored five her of game-high 12 points in overtime to pace the Titans (1-2, 1-2) past the Admirals (0-2, 0-2) in Class B Central.


MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 74, CENTRAL 51: Zack Wimmer scored eight of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter to lead the Griffins (2-0, 2-0) over the Golden Eagles (1-1, 1-1) in a Class B South game.

Sean Suskevich scored six of his 10 points in the second half. He pulled down six rebounds and dished out four assists for the Griffins.

Austin DeRose scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the first quarter for the Central.

TR EAST 70, BRICK 58: Kyle Schnering scored nine of his 14 points in the second half as the Raiders (1-1, 1-1) defeated the Green Dragons (0-2, 0-2) in a Class A South game.

Dave Lewis added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Toms River East.

Brian Dehrue added nine of his game-high 15 points in the second half for Brick.


CBA 38, FREEHOLD TWP. 29: Ricky Magliozzi’s 2-0 win at 120 pounds started a 12-point run over the final three bouts as the Colts (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Patriots (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A North match and avenged losses to Freehold Township the previous two seasons.

A pin by Erik Beshada (132), the Region VI runner-up at 113 last season, closed out the match and clinched the win.

SHORE 37, KEYPORT 34: Dan Baillie (182) and Dave Musselman (220) pinned and Andrew Smith (195) won in overtime as the Blue Devils (1-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 15-0 lead and then held on for the win over the Red Raiders (0-1, 0-1) in a Class B Central match.

Keyport’s Darnell Holmes (145) defeated Sam Koenig, 3-1 in overtime. Koenig was the District 23 third-place finisher at 125 in 2011.
