Facing a 7-2 deficit after three quarters, West Washington exploded for 22 points in the final six minutes to down host Milan 24-7 and claim Class A, Sectional 39 on Friday in high school football.
Cody Maudlin connected with Matt Brackney for a 13-yard score to put the the Senators (9-3) up 8-7 with 5:11 to play, then Tyler Dunn ran in from 1 yard and successfully rushed for a two-point conversion. Chad Thompson’s 65-yard interception return iced the game with 1:36 to play.
West Washington will host No. 2 Linton on Friday in a one-game regional.
The Indians finish 8-4.
* Lawrenceburg 54, Paoli 34: The Tigers (11-1) held on to eliminate the visiting Rams (9-3) to win the Class 2-A, Sectional 31 crown.
Lawrenceburg, which claimed its first title since 2005 and 15th in school history, will play Evansville Mater Dei in one-game regional.
Other state volleyball finals
No. 4-ranked Avon edged No. 2 Carmel 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 15-10 to win the Class 4-A state title Saturday night at Ball State’s Worthen Area.
The Orioles, state runner-up last season, captured their first volleyball state championship.
* No. 3 Indianapolis Chatard, also a runner-up last season, surprised top-ranked Yorktown 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12 for the Class 3-A crown.
* In the Class A championship, No. 5 Cowan nipped No. 3 Loogootee 25-18, 25-17, 14-25, 21-25, 15-13 to secure the school’s first-ever state title.
