High School Sports Rewind: Aug. 26 - Sept. 1

Relive some of the biggest happenings from the past week in Northeast Ohio prep sports.

Sunday

12th-year Garaway head football coach Jason Wallick became the program’s all-time wins leader on Aug. 24 when the Pirates defeated Dalton 42-6. Wallick has led the Bulldogs to 68 victories, including the squad’s 49-35 win against Fairless on Aug. 31. 

Monday

First-year Western Reserve Academy field hockey coach Kirsten Walther picked up her first win as the leader of the Pioneers on Aug. 27 when WRA shut out Orange 9-0. Annie Carter paced the Pioneers in scoring with three goals.

Canton Central Catholic baseball player Jake Krupar recently orally committed to attend the University of Toledo in fall 2013 and to play for the Rockets’ Mid-American Conference program.

Tuesday

Scott Jalowiec was recently named Midview’s next varsity baseball coach. The 1987 Midview alum had served as the school’s JV head coach since 2004.

Canton GlenOak transfer student-athlete Justin Smith was cleared to compete in interscholastic athletics by the Ohio High School Athletic Association on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles football player transferred from North Canton Hoover in March.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, Akron Ellet forfeited its 63-6 win over Springfield on Aug. 24th after realizing an ineligible player participated for the Orangemen in the contest.

Thursday

A handful of area hockey teams have announced their intentions to band together and form the Great Lakes League, beginning in the 2013-14 school year. The new, eight-team league will consist of current Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Red Division members St. Edward, St. Ignatius, Padua, Holy Name, Lake Catholic, Walsh Jesuit and University School and current independent program Gilmour Academy.

Saturday

The Canton GlenOak girls cross country team won the Division I team title at the Ashley White-Stumpf Memorial Cross Country Invitational. Louisville’s Mackenzie Rankin took top honors individually.
