High School Sports Rewind: June 3 - June 9

Relive some of the biggest happenings from the past week in Northeast Ohio prep sports.

Monday

Solon standout pitcher Matt Smoral was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 50th overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Smoral sat out the 2012 season due to a foot injury.

Three Solon football players recently announced the local colleges in which they’ll attend and play football for in the fail. Quarterback Patrick Kramer is headed to John Carroll University, lineman Vince Hill is headed to Hiram College and kicker/punter Alex Knight is headed to Walsh University.

Four-year Hawken volleyball standout Kennedy Clyde recently announced that she will attend Marietta College in the fall and play for the school’s Division III volleyball program.

Tuesday

Pending school board approval, Dave Waseity is expected to be named Massillon Perry’s next varsity girls basketball coach.

Gilmour Academy rising junior volleyball player Jessica Janota has been selected to compete as a member of the USA Volleyball A1 Team.

Two area student-athletes recently announced they will attend Muskingum University this fall and continue their respective athletic careers as Fighting Muskies. Canton GlenOak graduate Angela Darnley will join the school’s women’s basketball program, and Uniontown Green graduate Jennifer Hastings will join the school’s women’s soccer program. 

Lincoln West defeated Rhodes 3-1 in the Senate Athletic League baseball championship game on Tuesday at Progressive Field. Manny Garcia struck out seven batters while pitching a complete game for the victorious Wolverines.

Wednesday

The high school softball All-Ohio teams were announced on Wednesday. Several Northeast Ohioans earned the recognition, and Keystone’s Kenzi Conrad was named Ohio’s Gatorade Softball Player of the Year.

North Canton Hoover junior softball player Ally Farrah collected three singles and scored a run on Wednesday, as the Stark All-Stars defeated the Summit All-Stars 7-4 in an exhibition contest part of the Barney Ellis All-Star Fastpitch Softball Series at Firestone Stadium.

Lourdes University recently announced that Akron East graduate India Banks will enroll in the school to study business and join its women’s basketball program.

Thursday

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors approved a recommendation on Thursday to add eight wheelchair championship final events – four for boys and four for girls – to the 2013 OHSAA state track and field tournament.

Mike Coreno was recently named Brush High School’s next varsity girls basketball head coach. Coreno previously served as a head coach at Shaker Heights, Kenston, Cleveland Central Catholic Richmond Heights and St. Peter Chanel.

Friday

The East squad topped the West squad 49-27 in the 31st annual Lorain County Senior All-Star football game in Elyria on Friday night. Elyria quarterback Dustin Stolarksi and Firelands quarterback Kyle Smith were named the game’s MVPs.
