Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School junior quarterback Tom Tupa Jr. has orally committed to attend Miami University beginning in 2013-14 and to play for the RedHawks’ Mid-American Conference football team.
The Westlake baseball team defeated Massillon Perry 6-2 in a Division I state tournament semifinal on Thursday to advance to the program’s first title game on Saturday in veteran head coach Jeff Short’s final season. Corey Bowers hit a third-inning home run and drove in another run with an RBI double in the fourth inning for the victorious Demons.
The Columbus DeSales baseball team ended Lake Catholic’s season with a 3-0 Division II state tournament semifinal win against the Cougars on Thursday. A dominant pitching performance by Nick Eltzroth and Dominic Delmote’s second-inning single that scored two runs were all the Stallions would need to advance to Saturday’s championship game.
The Convoy Crestview softball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to top Strasburg-Franklin 8-7 in a Division IV state tournament semifinal on Thursday. Terra Crowle went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs for the victorious Knights.
The Warren Champion softball team recorded a come-from-behind 6-4 Division III state tournament semifinal win over Felicity-Franklin on Thursday.
The North Canton Hoover softball team defeated Medina 5-2 in a Division I state tournament semifinal contest on Friday. The victorious Vikings scored three runs in the fourth inning.
The Cuyahoga Heights baseball team advanced to its first state title game in 36 seasons by defeating Berlin Hiland 6-4 in a Division IV state semifinal game on Friday. Senior Austin Lane hit two home runs and drove in five runs for the victorious Redskins.
Lebanon freshman pitcher Tara Trainer limited the Elyria softball team to just three hits, as the Warriors defeated the Pioneers 3-1 in a Division I state semifinal contest on Friday.
The St. Edward rugby team defeated Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 10-7 in overtime on a penalty kick by Ian Hilldebrant to win the Division I state championship on Friday. The Lakewood girls rugby team captured its own Division title with a 20-5 win against St. Joseph on May 27.
Fourth-year Hudson softball coach Jeff Brown recently resigned from his coaching post, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
Veteran Canal Fulton Northwest head softball coach Dean Everhart recently resigned from his coaching post.
The Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller baseball team scored six runs in the first three innings of Saturday’s Division I state championship game and hung on late to defeat Westlake 9-6 and win the program’s sixth state title.
The Cuyahoga Heights baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the top of the seventh inning in the Division IV state championship game on Saturday to knot the score, but Minster scored a run in the bottom half of the inning for the walk-off 5-4 win and the program’s second consecutive state title. Devon Poeppelman drove in the winning run with a two-out single.
The LaGrange Keystone softball team scored seven unanswered runs to defeat Greenville 7-2 on Saturday to cap its 32-0 perfect season with a Division II state championship.
Behind a two-hit shutout by sophomore pitcher Tara Thacker, the North Canton Hoover softball team defeated Lebanon 2-0 in the Division I state championship game on Saturday to win the program’s sixth overall state title.
Convoy Crestview won its second state softball championship on Saturday by defeating Vienna Mathews 6-2 in the Division IV title tilt.
Hathaway Brown defeated New Albany 17-13 to win the Division II Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association state championship at Mason High School while Medina defeated Upper Arlington 10-9 at the same venue in the Division I Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association state championship game for the program’s third consecutive state title.
Congratulations to the numerous Northeast Ohio student-athletes who earned medals at the track and field state tournament in Columbus. The St. Edward track and field squad won its first Division I team state title. The St. Vincent-St. Mary girls track and field squad won the Division II team title while the school’s boys squad finished runner-up.
Hathaway Brown recently named Carmen Ptacek as the school’s next varsity girls soccer coach. She has served as an assistant coach for the team the past eight seasons.
