High School Sports Rewind: Sept. 9 - Sept. 15

Relive some of the biggest happenings from the past week in Northeast Ohio prep sports.

Sunday

Gilmour Academy junior swimmer Macie McNichols was recently named to the USA Swimming 2011-12 Scholastic All-America Team. Sophomore Kiley Eble, junior Agnes Mirando, seniors Monica Flocken and McNichos were also named to the 2011-2012 National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA)/Speedo Girls High School Swimming All-America Team. 

Monday

Walsh Jesuit junior Chase Johnson won the individual title at the prestigious Kiely Golf Cup high school golf tournament on Monday with a score of 3-under 69, one shot off the eight-year tourney’s all-time record.

Tuesday

The Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association recently announced its 2012 Senior All-Academic Team, honoring members of last year’s high school graduating class one final time for their achievements in the classroom and on the baseball diamond during their prep athletic careers.

Wednesday

Avon Lake sophomore golfer Niki Schroeder broke the Turkeyfoot Invitational score of 68 on Wednesday when she recorded a score of 5-under 67 to place first individually in the annual high school meet.  

Canton Central Catholic girls basketball standout Aaliyah Dotson recently committed to attend Florida Atlantic University in fall 2013 and to join the school’s women’s hoops program, according to Central coach Gary Isler.

Cleveland’s Whitney Young played the school’s first-ever football game against Cleveland John F. Kennedy on Wednesday. Check out our photos from the JV contest.   

Thursday

Independence senior baseball standout J.P Sorma recently committed to attend Ohio State in fall 2013 and to join the Buckeyes’ baseball program.

The Wadsworth volleyball team defeated Suburban League foe Highland on Thursday in the first varsity athletic event in the school’s new gym.

Friday

According to 21 WFMJ Sports in Youngstown, Dan McKeown resigned as Boardman’s varsity head boys basketball coach after two seasons on Friday.

The Mogadore football team defeated Woodridge 35-28 in a Portage Trail Conference County Division gridiron clash on Friday to record the program’s 600th all-time victory and to become the 13th school in the state to reach the milestone.

Saturday

The Strongsville volleyball team defeated Padua in the championship tilt of the inaugural Kenston Varsity Volleyball tournament on Saturday to claim the eight-team event title.
