High School Sports Roundup: Second-half surge powers MO past MW


The Mission Oak Hawks edged the Mt. Whitney Pioneers 76-73 in a non-league boys basketball game Monday night at Mission Oak High School.

Blake Shannon poured in a game-high 24 points for Mission Oak (2-0). Bobby Alvarado had 23 points for the Hawks, and Kollan Mundley added 12.

Down 24-20 at halftime, Mission Oak scored 56 points over the final two quarters. The game was tied 46-46 at the end of the third quarter.

Dannon Frigulti scored a team-high 23 points for Mt. Whitney (0-2). Frigulti was 6 of 11 from beyond the 3-point arc. Ethan Moore scored 16 points, and Turner Nelson added 14 points. Mt. Whitney sank six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

“We played them tough in the first half. We had too many defensive lapses in the second half. It’s tough to be successful when you give up 56 points in the second half,” Mt. Whitney coach Bob Aguilar said.

Redwood 70, Lindsay 63: The Rangers and Cardinals combined for 43 points in the opening period, setting the pace for a highly-competitive non-league win for the Rangers in Lindsay.

The Cardinals (3-2) held a 22-21 advantage after the first eight minutes of play before widening its lead to as many as eight points in the second quarter and three points in the fourth quarter. Redwood (2-2) used four consecutive steals to erase the first deficit and back-to-back 3’s to flip the second.

“Both teams came out blazing on offense,” Lindsay head coach Lance Cheatwood said. “It was a great game. Unfortunately we had to lose.”

Linday’s Chris Misaalefua led all scorers with 21 points. Mike Montoya led the Rangers with 15. Ricky Ramirez finished one behind with 14, as did Lindsay’s Gavin Mann and Jacob Hernandez.

Girls Basketball

Redwood 69, Lindsay 62: Corissa Turley had 21 points and 22 rebounds to lead the Rangers past the Cardinals in a non-league game at Redwood.

Jasmine Black had 17 points for Redwood (6-1) and Jordan Surfus added 14.

Christina Castro scored 18 points to pace Lindsay (7-1). Destiny Garcia added 15 points.

Girls Soccer

Exeter 6, Woodlake 0: Irene Moreno scored three goals and the Monarchs cruised to a nonleague victory over the Tigers.

Sara Campos and Jessica Rodriguez each added a goal for the Monarchs, who improved to 4-2-1 on the season. Exeter also scored on an own-goal.

The Monarchs will play Monache on Friday in a Strathmore Tournament game.


The Redwood wrestling team took 10th place overall at the Chukchansi Invitational at Madera South High School over the weekend.

Redwood’s top placer was Joey Cisneros, who finished second in the 106-pound weight division. Redwood had five wrestlers finish in the top of in their respective weight class. Sammy Pena took fourth at 113, Isaiah Torres took fifth at 113, Darrion Harris took fourth at 120, Blake Marple finished seventh at 182 and Abraham Meza took eighth at 220 pounds.

El Diamante’s Ivan Aguirre finished in sixth place at 106 , and Mt. Whitney’s Jaime Galvan took eighth at 195.
