The El Diamante girls water polo team is peaking at the right time of the season.
The Miners closed out the regular season with three straight victories, and they made it four in a row with a 10-7 victory over No. 9 Sunnyside in the first round of the Central Section Division I playoffs on Wednesday evening at the El Diamante pool.
The No. 8-seeded Miners improved to 19-7 overall and went undefeated at home this season.
“That was the best part of today,” El Diamante coach Kristen Ruby said about going undefeated at home. “Last year, we didn’t get a home playoff game, so to get that is great. Every girl played. They all got in and that was really fun.”
Faith Silveria led the way for the Miners with her five-goal performance. Nichole Schouten added two goals, and Brooke Battle, Kelsey Stephenson and Kasey Stoebig each added one goal. Goalkeeper Marissa Leal stayed busy in the cage with 12 saves.
Up next for El Diamante is a showdown against No. 1 Clovis at noon Saturday in Clovis.
“Their biggest asset is that they’re fast,” Ruby said about Clovis. “You have to not have turnovers, like in any other sport. You have to control the ball. Focus on not turning it over and being smart on defense. Playing total team defense is going to be really important.”
“We’re on a four-game win streak right now. You want to peak at the end as you’re going into the playoffs, and we are.”
