Senior Daija Griffin tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Piscataway High School girls soccer team to a 3-2 opening day win over Monroe in a Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division clash on Thursday.

Kelsey Nugent and Vedika Bandhi added goals for the Chiefs (1-0), while Lauren Gaskel and Ashley Batista scored for Monroe.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK 2, WOODBRIDGE 0: Brielle Errico and Jessica Puchalski each scored goals to lead the Vikings (1-0) past the Barrons (0-1).

OLD BRIDGE 5, J.P. STEVENS 0: Nicole Brennan scored a goal and had two assists as five second-half goals propelled the Knights (1-0) past the Hawks (0-1).

BISHOP AHR 2, SOUTH PLAINFIELD 1 (OT): Alexa Povelaitis netted an early goal and then buried the game-winner five minutes into the first overtime to lead the Trojans (1-0) past the Tigers (0-1).

CARTERET 3, NEW BRUNSWICK 0: Stephanie Chen, Fiorella Doglio, and Giselles Perez all found the back of the net to lead the Ramblers (1-0) past the Zebras (0-1).

SPOTSWOOD 5, SOUTH AMBOY 1: Rebecca Hager and Katie Wasserman each had a goal and an assist to lead a balanced Charger (1-0) attack.

TIMOTHY CHRISTIAN 3, DUNELLEN 1: Freshman Danielle Maniguet posted a hat trick, including the tie-breaking goal at the start of the second half, to lift Timothy Christian.

WATCHUNG HILLS 3, EAST BRUNSWICK 2: Natasha Ntone-Kuou scored in each half for East Brunswick.

NORTH BRUNSWICK 2, PERTH AMBOY 0: Freshman Tatum Altman scored two second-half goals to lead North Brunswick.


MONROE 5, PISCATAWAY 1: The Falcons (1-0) scored five unanswered goals, with Kyle Kaplan scoring two. Aaron Freeman scored in the fourth minute for the Chiefs (0-1).

OLD BRIDGE 4, ST. JOSEPH 1: Amr Mohamed started off the scoring for a balanced Old Bridge attack as the Knights (1-0) claimed the Rich Mould Memorial Cup with the win over the Falcons (0-1).

NORTH BRUNSWICK 4, SOUTH BRUNSWICK 1: David Coffie-Owusu had two goals and an assist while Kyle Telfer and Amir Toloue each added a goal to lead the Raiders (1-0) past the Vikings (0-1).

EDISON 3, SAYREVILLE 1: Mused Mohamed scored two goals and Mohamed Mohamed had a goal and an assist to lead the Eagles (1-0), as they outshot the Bombers (0-1) by a 22-3 margin.

J.P. STEVENS 1, SOUTH PLAINFIELD 0: Chris Chan scored an unassisted goal early in the second half as the Hawks (1-0) shut out the Tigers (0-1).

WESTFIELD 2, EAST BRUNSWICK 1: Richard Kehoe scored a second half goal as the Bears fell to 0-1, matching their loss total from a year ago.

SOUTH RIVER 2, CARTERET 1: Paul Ponce and Feli Csombak scored goals for the Rams (1-0) to lead them past the Ramblers (0-1).

MIDDLESEX 7, WARDLAW-HARTRIDGE 1: Geo Barboza had a hat trick with three goals and an assist and Steven Martinez notched three assists to lead the Blue Jays (1-0) past the Rams (0-1).

HILLSBOROUGH 3, FRANKLIN 1: Jonathan Galindo scored a goal for Franklin (0-1).


SOUTH PLAINFIELD 2, EAST BRUNSWICK 1: Shannon Hughes scored two goals, including the game-winner 10 minutes into the second half to lead the Tigers (1-0) past the Bears (0-1) in a rematch of last year’s county final.

MONROE 2, SAYREVILLE 0: Jenna Parisen notched a goal and an assist and Brooke Goetz also added a goal to lead the Falcons (1-0) past the Bombers (0-1).

OLD BRIDGE 3, PISCATAWAY 0: Megan Carson notched two goals and an assist to lead the Knights (1-0) past the Chiefs (0-1).

FRANKLIN 1, NORTH PLAINFIELD 0: Tara Meyers scored the lone goal in the second half as the Warriors (1-0) controlled the game in defeating the Canucks (0-1).
