HNT Roundup: Edison shuts out New Brunswick


Sophomore forward Mused Mohamed scored two goals and Sammie Kim netted a goal and an assist to lead the Edison High School boys soccer team to a 3-0 victory over New Brunswick in a Greater Middlesex Conference White Division game on Thursday in Edison.

Jordan Rosenhouse and Mohamed Siddiqui also each tallied assists for the Eagles (10-3-2), who earlier in the week clinched the White Division title.

Edison keeper Dave Jordan made two saves in the shutout while Elmer Flores had four saves for New Brunswick (7-6).

North Brunswick 4, Monroe 3: Anish Baweja scored one goal and had three assists on goals scored by David Coffie-Owusu, Brandon Mattis, and Amir Toloue to lead North Brunswick (9-2-1) past Monroe (9-6). The Raiders carried a 2-1 lead at halftime.

East Brunswick 5, Old Bridge 3: Rich Kehoe netted a goal and two assists to lead East Brunswick (9-5-1). Billy Richard scored two goals for Old Bridge (7-7-1). After being knotted 2-2 at half, the Bears jumped out to a 4-2 lead before Richard scored in the 78th minute to cut the lead to 4-3. East Brunswick then scored an empty net goal after Old Bridge pulled its keeper.

St. Joseph 5, Piscataway 3: Tobi Oluwalana scored two goals and Dario Camporeale netted a goal and an assist to lead St. Joseph (4-10). Oluwalana broke a 3-3 with his goal in the 65th minute. Patrick Bell and Alex Riviere had the other two goals for the Falcons. Aaron Freeman, Yvans Tasgue and Dylan Tsague all scored goals for Piscataway (2-11). Joe Bruno made six saves for St. Joseph and Zach Tuttle netted eight saves for the Chiefs.

J.P. Stevens 1, Colonia 0: Sid Hariharan scored an unassisted goal in the 76th minute to lift J.P. Stevens (7-6-1). Ryan Litterer stopped 10 shots in goal for Colonia (4-9-1).

Sayreville 2, Perth Amboy 2: Andres Maladonado and Alhaji Sheriff scored second half goals for Sayreville (7-5-3). Kelvin Leon neeted a goal and an assist while Sergio Flores also scored for Perth Amboy (4-7-2). Zouhair Zamaraki made 14 saves for the Bombers and Panthers’ keeper Brandon Luna recorded nine saves.

Woodbridge 2, South Plainfield 1: Daniel Macaulay-Smith scored two goals to lead Woodbridge (6-7-2) as Matt Montalvo and Reynaldo Brunert had the assists. Taylor Born scored on a feed from Josue Cevallos for the South Plainfield (4-6-5) goal. Rob Parker made seven saves for the Barrons and Patrick Boyle recorded seven saves for the Tigers.

Timothy Christian 2, Perth Amboy Tech 0: After a scoreless first half, Brandon McDougal scored on a penalty kick in the 47th minute to put Timothy Christian (11-0-1) ahead 1-0. Won Joon Kim added an insurance goal in the 60th minute off an assist from Zach Coyle for the Tigers. Evan Waldron made four saves in the win for the shutout while Perth Amboy Tech (12-2) keeper Milton Rendon stopped seven shots.

J.F. Kennedy 2, Carteret 1: Jason Carnalho and Johnny Evangelou each scored goals to lead J.F. Kennedy (4-11-1). Francisco Gonzalez netted a goal for Carteret (4-8-2). Danny Fernandez made nine saves for the Mustangs and Julio Velez recorded three saves for the Ramblers.

Franklin 2, Rutgers Prep 1: Ryan Kaplan scored a pair of goals, while Lucas Dunn and Pat Auguste recorded assists for Franklin (4-7). Reese Buchanan made seven saves for the Warriors. Zach Perez scored a goal for Rutgers Prep (4-10).

Girls Soccer

Piscataway 2, J.P. Stevens 0: Kelsey Nugent scored a goal in the 11th minute off Dajia Griffin’s assist to put Piscataway (11-2-1) ahead 1-0. Maia Williams extended the Chiefs lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute, scoring off a feed from Alanna Van Ness. Kristyn Shea made six saves in goal for the shutout while J.P. Stevens (6-7) keeper Erin Shea netted seven saves.

Bishop Ahr 2, Sayreville 1: Alexa Povelaitis scored two goals off assists from Jillian Vassallo and Tonilynn Taranto to lead Bishop Ahr (12-2), who finishes its White Division slate with a 12-0 record. Morgan Peacock scored a goal for Edison (8-7). Brianna Foster made five saves in the shutout for the Trojans while Eagles keeper Kerry Eskay netted eight saves.

Sayreville 1, South Brunswick 0: Senior Amy Comerford scored in the 32nd minute to propel Sayreville (9-3). Keepers Jackie O’Connor and Kelly Raub combined on the shutout with 14 saves for the Bombers. South Brunswick (7-8) goalie Casey Savoth had 15 saves.

Monroe 2, Woodbridge 1: Taylor Evanchik and Demi Rousseau scored goals off assists from Eva Vastardis and Stephanie Pasewaldt to lift Monroe (3-9). Hadiza Mamman scored for Woodbridge (1-14) with two minutes to play off Casey Nebus’ assist. Erica Junquet made five saves for the Falcons while Barrons goalie Ashley Kaduk finished with twelve saves.

South Plainfield 3, Perth Amboy 0: Carlee Gonzalez scored two goals and Sydni Surowiec netted the third goal to lead South Plainfield (7-7-1). Damaris Batista had 13 saves in net for Perth Amboy (0-12).

Metuchen 3, New Brunswick 0: Emily Weiner and Dana English scored second half goals for Metuchen (13-0-1) after the Bulldogs scored on an own goal in the first half.

North Brunswick 1, Colonia 1: Marylynn Muldowney scored for North Brunswick (5-7-1) as they played Colonia (4-9-2) to a tie.

Carteret 2, J.F. Kennedy 1: Giselles Perez scored two second half goals as Carteret (12-3-1) overcame a 1-0 deficit.

Field Hockey

South Plainfield 5, Sayreville 0: Cassidy Gillis tallied twice and three others found the back of the net for South Plainfield, which remained perfect. Sayreville fell to 3-11.

South Brunswick 2, Piscataway 0: The Vikings scored twice in the second half to earn a road victory.

East Brunswick 5, Metuchen 1: The Bears built a 5-0 lead at halftime, behind Taylor McNamara’s two goals.

Monroe 1, Old Bridge 0: Andrea French converted a Jenna Parisen pass deep into the second half, lifting Monroe. Old Bridge dropped to 3-11-1.

Bernards 6, Franklin 1: Emma Christus scored two of her three goals in the first half, leading Bernards (8-3).
