Hoover (Ala.) QB Connor Short makes short work of Northridge

By

Despite playing for one of the top high school teams in the country, Hoover, Ala., quarterback Connor Short hasn’t drawn a lot of attention from Division I recruiters, but that may change.

The 6-foot senior threw for five first-half touchdown passes and added a sixth on the first series of the second half before sitting out the rest of the No. 17 Buccaneers’ 55-7 defeat of Northridge (Tuscaloosa) on Friday. He completed 20 of 27 passes for 282 yards.

“Somebody is going to miss on him,” Hoover coach Josh Niblett said. “He isn’t the prototypical height, but he has all the intangibles. Connor understands our offense, which isn’t an easy offense to master.”

Short, also a shortstop for Hoover’s baseball team, stepped in as starting quarterback when Sam Gillikin broke his collarbone in the seventh game of the season last fall. Short finished with more than 2,000 passing yards and led the Bucs to a state runner-up finish.

“He has good range and a quick release,” Niblett said. “Recruiters are all about 6-4, but either you can play or you can’t.”
