Mesa Dobson held off a frenetic fourth period comeback from Gilbert Highland to grab a 75-61 road victory Friday night in a Division I boys basketball contest.

Highland outscored Dobson 26-18 in the final period, but fell short thanks to a stellar performance from Dobson senior guard Jaron Hopkins.

Hopkins knifed through double teams all night and scored from all over the floor on his way to 31 points for the game, besting his his season average of 25.8 points per game. He was also efficient from the free throw line, finishing 13 of 17 from the line.

Second-leading scorer junior guard Ryan Richardson added 13 points of his own, giving Dobson’s offensive leaders 44 of the team’s 75 points.

Highland junior Austin Witherill led the home team offensively all night, scoring 26 points, 12 of which came in the fourth period.

Highland leading scorer junior guard Jake Toolson was held to only 10 points after averaging nearly 15 points per game so far this season.

Dobson looked to be in complete control until complacency set in with a 57-35 lead. The visiting team then gave up 14 consecutive points to Highland, slashing Dobson’s lead to 10 points.

However, a dagger, a 3-pointer from Dobson’s Kairee Williams forced Highland to play aggressive full-court press defense to foul the visiting team.

Dobson is on a six-game winning streak following an opening season loss to Florence Poston Butte, and will play Mesa Desert Ridge on Tuesday, the third game in a five-game road trip. Highland will face Gilbert Perry at home on Monday.
