HS Roundup: El Diamante remains unbeaten in WYL girls volleyball


The El Diamante Miners remained on track for a West Yosemite League girls volleyball championship with a sweep of the Mt. Whitney Pioneers Monday night at El Diamante.

The Miners won 25-13, 25-13, 26-24.

Lauren Torres had 10 kills and six blocks for El Diamante (20-2, 7-0). Katelyn Anderson had seven kills and Bianca Pattani had 14 digs.

“We talked about coming out strong to start the second half of the league schedule and we did that,” El Diamante coach Leslie Sorensen said. “We got a little sloppy in the third set, and Mt. Whitney had some strong serving. We were down, but we showed some mental toughness and prevailed.”

Kendall McGovern had eight kills for Mt. Whitney (15-12, 3-5). Ellie Warmerdam had 11 digs, and Lizzie Roncelli had six kills, four digs and three blocks.

Golden West 3, Hanford 1: The Trailblazers topped the Bullpups 25-10, 25-14, 21-25, 25-21 in a WYL match at Golden West.

Darian Jimenez recorded 11 kills, 14 digs and two blocks for Golden West (5-7, 3-5). Rachel Fiser had 23 assists to go with seven aces. Allison Cutler had 23 digs and five aces for the Trailblazers.

Woodlake 3, Granite Hills 0: The Tigers scored a 25-3, 25-20, 25-13 sweep of the Grizzlies in an East Sequoia League match.

KiAnna Cunningham had 17 kills for Woodlake (17-4, 4-0). Brenda Acosta had 35 assists and three aces. Quinn Keller added seven kills.

Girls Tennis

Mt. Whitney 8, Hanford 1: Lai Saechao posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 3 singles match for the Pioneers in their WYL victory over the Bullpups.

Brooke Mendonca posted a 6-1, 6-1, victory for Mt. Whitney (12-8, 7-3) in the No. 1 singles match.

Emily Rosa won a 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 decision in the No. 2 singles match for the Pioneers, and paired with Saechao for an 8-2 win in doubles.

Golden West 6, Lemoore 3: The Trailblazers took four of the six singles matches en route to a WYL win over the Tigers.

Kristine Schneider won the No. 2 singles match for Golden West (12-8, 8-3) with a 6-1, 6-2 score. Indya Messier (6-1, 6-2) and Joy Rubio (6-4, 6-4) each won their respective singles matches, and then paired up for an 8-5 win in doubles.

Tulare Union 6, Porterville 2: The Redskins kept their bid alive for an East Yosemite League title with a win over the Panthers.

Tulare Union (13-1, 7-1) won five of the six singles matches. Asia Boatman posted a 6-1, 7-5 victory in the No. 1 singles match. Radhika Shah cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 2 singles match.

Kasi Bergman had a close win in the No. 4 singles match, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. Bergman and Boatman teamed for an 8-4 doubles win.

Immanuel 7, CVC 2: The Eagles swept all three doubles matches to post a Central Sequoia League win over the Cavaliers.

CVC (10-10, 6-3) received its two points with wins in the top singles matches from No. 1 Emily Whyte (8-2) and No. 2 Nicole Bouvia (8-6).

Strathmore 9, Lindsay 0: The Spartans blanked the Cardinals in an East Sequoia League match.

Jessica Moreno posted an 8-5 win in the No. 1 singles match for Strathmore.

Exeter 6, Dinuba 3: The Monrachs defeated the Emperors in a CSL match.

Exeter’s Hunter Johnson had a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles match.

Rosie Cavazos posted a 4-6, 6-0, 7-2 win in the No. 4 singles match for Dinuba (3-6 in CSL).

Boys Water Polo

Redwood 14, Hanford West 9: The Rangers remained perfect in WYL play with a win over the Huskies.

Mario Barvante and Hunter Crockett each had four goals to lead Redwood (8-0 in league). Landon Silvas added three goals, and Jarret Jones recorded seven saves.

Golden West 14, Hanford 6: Tyler Weir, Robert Green and Jake Goforth each had three saves for the Trailblazers in their WYL win over the Bullpups.

Chris Byrd and Preston Parsons combined for 13 saves for Golden West (9-8, 4-4).

El Diamante 10, Mt. Whitney 7: Drew Montes scored five goals to lead the Miners over the Pioneers in a WYL match.

Brandon Watts added three goals, and Jacob Aldaco recorded 14 saves for El Diamante (4-3 in WYL).

Nate Wyatt had a team-high three goals for Mt. Whitney. Colton Dahlenburg added two goals.

Girls Water Polo

El Diamante 14, Mt. Whitney 9: Faith Silveria had a match-high six goals to lead the Miners over the Pioneers in a WYL match at El Diamante.

Brooke Battle had three goals for El Diamante (14-6, 6-1) and Erin Helpio added two. Morgan Heath scored twice for Mt. Whitney.

Hanford West 2, Redwood 0: Amy Peterson had 17 blocks for the Rangers in their WYL loss to the Huskies.
