Junior Amanda Izzo scored a first-half goal and senior Amanda Powell added a second-half tally Saturday to help the 1A-seeded Hunterdon Central High School girls soccer team to a 2-1 victory over 2A North Hunterdon in the final of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament at Hunterdon Central High School.
Izzo scored off a Ally DeLuca pass to get the Red Devils (12-8) going, and they carried that advantage into halftime.
North Hunterdon (8-11) pulled to within a goal a minute later when Katherine Campbell found the back of the net after a long throw-in by Jillian Kennedy.
“The girls were thrilled,” said Central coach Jeannine Callhoun, whose team hadn’t won a county crown since 2007 when only Hunterdon and Warren counties competed in the tournament. “They played a super game and continued the progress we’ve been making.”
Jeremy Levine received a pass from Travis Chigi and scored from eight yards out in the 42nd minute as the 1A-seeded Hunterdon Central High School boys soccer team defeated 1B Pope John 1-0 in the final of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament.
“In the second half we got back to playing our game, which is to get possession,” Hunterdon Central coach Anson Smith said. “We knew that was going to be the key. In the first half they rattled us by not letting us get possession of the ball, in the second half I think we did what we do best.”
