Urbandale’s Kyla Inderski celebrated homecoming week’s Superhero Day on Tuesday by wearing a red, white and blue costume.

On Tuesday night, she played like Wonder Woman. Inderski smashed 22 kills in the No. 6-ranked J-Hawks’ sweep of Waukee, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 at Urbandale.

Inderski, a junior, has been dressing up every day during homecoming week along with many of her classmates. Tuesday’s outfit — a generic super hero, she said — included running tights and a cape.

“Some people thought I was Wonder Woman,” Inderski said. “If they want to think that, OK.”

The outside hitter has averaged a team-best 3.5 kills a set for Urbandale (15-2).

Emilee Erichsen and Celie Kohls both added nine kills. Mallary Erbes had 23 assists and two ace serves.

Urbandale rallied past Waukee (8-9), a state tournament team last year, in all three sets.

“We’ve always been the comeback kids,” Inderski said.

The J-Hawks broke away from a 22-22 tie in the opening set by scoring the last three points. Paige Staton punched the final kill.

Waukee led 24-21 in the second set before Urbandale ran off five straight points to win.

Urbandale trailed 5-0 in the third set, but Inderski slammed three kills during her team’s match-ending 7-3 run.

“You’ve got to lay out things with the mindset that you’ve got nothing to lose,” said Kohls, a junior middle hitter.

Urbandale’s losses came to Cedar Falls and Nevada. The J-Hawks play with a focus to win.

“They know what the score is, but they keep cutting away until the end of the game,” Urbandale coach Liz Baethke said. “They don’t stop.”

Waukee was led by Maddie Nevenhoven’s 11 kills. Morgan Potts led the defense with 22 digs. Danika Mikesh added 13.

“We graduated eight seniors and have two returning starters,” Waukee coach Ed Frederick said. “We’re inexperienced, but we’re getting better with every practice.”

Urbandale has a young team, too. The J-Hawks have two seniors.

“You’ve got to get over your fears,” Kohls said.
